my buddy was changing the tranny filter on the c4. when he got the filter off, he said: "only the spring came out" i looked next to him and saw the cup that goes in the spring. i didn't see a ball though. i thought the c4 has an ear on one side fo the filter. the spring sits on the ear/tab. the cup sits in the spring. but what about the ball? he insists that he didn't see a ball. i checked the hole to make sure it wasn't stuck in there. we still can't find it though.
.
is there a ball that sits on top of the spring and cup?
.
or is it only supposed to have the spring and the cup (with no ball) to begin with?

are you talking about the filter that's behind the tranny pan? mine doesn't have a spring, cup, or a ball as far as i remember? there's a spring and ball inside the valve body but you don't need to take that apart to change the filter?

i guess this doesn't help you but I'm just generally interested in learning more about cars and would like to learn more so I would like to hear more about this, maybe a picture?

unfortunately i dont hae access to a digital camera at the moment. when you remove the pan from the bottom of the transmission, you can see the valve body and the oil screen (filter) thats bolted to the bottom of the valve body. on certain models of the c3/c4/c5/c6 transmissions, there is a tab that sticks out of the side of the oil screen. it is in the same plane as the top of the screen where it touches the valve body. that tab holds the cup and spring in place. whenever the oil screen is unbolted from the valve body, the spring and cup generally shoots out if you dont pay close attention. thats what happened to my buddy. i found a website that has limited information on these small parts. the cup that sits in the spring has an indentation in the top of it (it looks like a cup). the indentation looks like it is big enough for a plastic ball to sit in the top of it. I have a ball in mine but i've been told that the ball is optional so long as the cup and spring are put back in. thats what i've been told. we are going to use just the spring and cup without the ball like we've heard. i'll post another message to let everyone know what happens.
