undersize pulleys

You mean underdrive pulleys? No. There really isn't enough space to put them on anyhow, and the gains are negligible. Underdrive pulleys are bigger than normal pulleys, and the waterpump pulley would likely hit the harmonic balancer.

Sorry to derail, but what about an overdrive pulley just for the alternator, while the subject's up? I'm not yet ready to do the planned 3G swap.

Depending on the exact application, Ford used to use smaller pulleys on otherwise identical alternators to increase output, such as 50 amps to 60 or 70.

Does that work on alternators? I'd have thought current capacity of an alternator was really related to the two sets of windings.

The wire size ultimately limits the amount of current (they melt) but otherwise they just keep increasing current output as they speed up.

Regulators for alternators typically do not have the current limiting circuitry that generators have.

Well, my engine never sees over 4000 RPM under load. Turning it 20% faster would mean it would spike a few times at effectively 4800 RPM. Really, how awful is that going to be? Even if it was bad, why not just run a new output wire?

Could you use V8 underdrive pulleys for the alternator and power steering pump?

The problem with underdrive pulleys is they work great at speed but you tend to not produce enough amps when sitting in traffic.

I think March Performance makes pulley kits for almost all year Ford V8's.

As for the water pump pulley Mike's on it

Says he plans to offer a V-belt and serpentine setup (scroll to bottom)

Actually, I have been wondering about this for my power steering pump. The power steering is way too over-assisted in my opinion and thought that a underdrive pully would help.

I had pulleys made for my 302 from Auto Specialties Performance. he was much more reasonably priced then March Pulleys. I'm sure that if someone wanted, he could machine pulleys for a 6. He may just need a set of originals to work from.
