evidentally, when I blew my head gasket, I damaged/cracked a piston...

I am really getting tired of this mechanic. First he forgot/didnt bother to change a lifter...now when he takes apart the engine, there is a cracked piston.

ANYBODY HAVE AN EXTRA PISTON LYING AROUND?

I need a .020 ring set...which I saw on ebay for $10...is that good?
and I need a piston....

sooo frustrating because I really need to keep money down on this car...

Man, that really sucks. I had 5 new new pistons for a rebuilt block (.040), which was damaged. Unfortunately, my dad sent block and all to the scrap heap without telling me :( . It was there in S FL too.
If you get fed up enough with that mechanic, i know of a place in Hollywood that seemed to do a decent job on my 68. I dont know if they still have it, but there was a 250 short block also sitting there that I almost bought.
Anyway man, good luck!

I dont know too much about engine and stuff...but he told me I need .020 pistons...so I gues sthe block was bore once...is it?

so .020 cast pistons...orginal...

if I do repce all 6...what should I use? A lighter one? forged? this is where I nee dteh advice....

If I had known/thought from the beginnning...I would have just nought the engine of the guy in orlando...for $400...or rebuilt mine all the way

is this mechanic the owner of the shop where it's being worked on?
if not, i think i'd consider going and having "words" with the owner/manager

yeah...owner/operator. I feel bad becuase I know for sure he is veru ill...had kidney stones. Wasnt supposed to live past last June...in liver failure and has a colsopy bag. What can I do except be nice and ask how he is.

I want to get the car driveable...and then I wont go back to him...the only reason its there now is that he didnt fix something and wa sdoing something for free and...surprise...found something else wrong...

I used to live with my folks, just south of Hollywood. Right now I am in Gainesville. I may make a trip to Miami to see a friend in about a week.
The only piston that I managed to save was the cracked one out of that 200. I keep it as a reminder of the dangers of using a (cheap) screwdriver to determine TDC
The guys in Hollywood are complete car guys. They have a lot where they do it all- body and drivetrane. They have a few wrecked cars, old and new. I think they are called Classic cars ( or something like that) of hollywood. They are on Dixe Highway. I'll try to find out for ya when I get a chance.

I feel your piston pain. When my father rebuilt my engine 10 years ago, he used flat-top forged pistons.

A few months ago, I sent it to the engine shop to have head work done and also find out why the number 1 cylinder was losing compression (I hoped it was the rings). Well, I found out that when the engine was rebuilt the first time, my dad should have bored out the cylinders and put in over sized pistons.

Those nice hi-performance pistons have about a 1000 miles on them (the car has sat in the garage for 9 of those 10 years) and now they have to be replaced...

Oh I think thats where my mustang was fixed when the previuos owner got hit in the front left....if you say they are good, I will check them out

I tracked down two different pistons... both CAST...one from Advance AUto which I had to special order for $29 plus shipping...

and one from Auto Zone for $15...which I can pick up tomorrow...

I called NPD but they dont carry 6 cyl pistons...and Jegs said I had to buy the whole set?!?!

I guess no one wanted my business... :?:
