Want to put a 77 250 in place of the 170 in my 67 bronco

Hello all, I have a 67 bronco with a 170 and would like to install a 250 from a 77 granada. I was wondering what all needs to be done to do this? I have read the bells and oil pans are different. I really want to be able to belt the new bell to the original 3 speed. Thanks for any help, Scott

easy, get a bell for the 3spd for a v8, it bolts right on.

oil pan, you have to cut the bottom of the 170 off and weld it to the top flang of the 250 oil pan. it's the only way. also, you'll have to modify the oil pickup tube i'm told.
it's also best to have a 2inch body lift on the EB, as you'll have carb clearance issues with EVERYTHING. 1inch can get away but 2inch makes it easier.

the 250ci uses v8 trans, so if you wanted you could upgrade to the other wonderful trans that other love in the EB's.

I'm going the 250ci with 4r70w trans, and atomic TBI, all with CI head and header in my 66 bronco. it will take a while but it will be a blast to drive.

Just a suggestion but a 200 is a true bolt in swap and they respond very well to mods like a cam, basic head work and a higher cfm stock looking carb. Not trying to talk you out of the 250 but my primary reason for the 250 in the Bronco was getting a much better trans with overdrive. I can say from experience that the stock 250 has good low end torque which seems to work well with the way I drive my Bronco.
You can check out the dyno results for stock and modified 200's and 250's here or classicinlines.com can't remember which.

I have a 200 here also. I just figured a 70 CI boost in displacement would be better than 30CI. Like they say "No replacement for displacement". I plan on either doing a 1V TBI or modifying the head to direct mount a 2V carb. Also plan on a cam and headers.

Then you'll prob wanna ditch the 3.03 tranny too. Will U keep the 4 WD? Will it be a 10% off roader? 50%? What kinda terrain?

I think the braze-together-oil pans and 'reverse the oil p/u' R not needed w/minor suspension lift (2"). Sloting Mavrick towers drops the engine for hood clearence w/carb/induction, some say a 1" BL is enuff.

Here's hopin we keep a running record SOMEWHERE to make a sticky for Mike on this ford 6 mod.

Since the engine is not original to the vehicle, I want to upgrade to something I can get a little more power out of. I was going to put a 5.0L in it until I found out about all the mods I would have to do. The truck is too original (except for the engine)to go hacking it up. I doubt it will ever be off-road as long as I own it. It will be getting a full frame-off restoration. I just want something I can take on a Sunday drive, take to work on a nice day and, take to some shows. It will be getting a full frame-off restoration.

so may B drop the frnt driveshaft, transfer case, etc (2 WD only) and the top. There are plenty of rag tops for it...
Sounds like how you'd like to drive it (convertable). That way no difficulty w/the pan. I'd still suggest a 1 - 2 inch BL. (the extra deck hight to the 250 will clear easily then) The vehicles scream for that from the factory if U ask me (a figure of speech, I know, you aren't). Take a look at some in BD mag or on the CB site and see if you don't like the look.
BTW: if U do keep the 3.03 it's good to 500 HP

What clutch, flywheel, and spacer plate between the trans and engine should I use?

If you can find a 250 fw then you could probably use the stock 250 clutch. As far as the spacer plate the stock 250 item if you can find one although it's possible any sbf plate would work. Try posting in the parts wanted section on this site. It takes awhile to track this stuff down sometimes. The six cylinder Bronco community is small.
I slotted my motor mounts a little and have a 1" bl and have no clearance problems using a stock Mustang 1970 250 air cleaner. I actually do not think slotting the mounts was needed. A 1" bl did not require any mods on my 66.
Yep I agree more cubes is good.
There is a publication "The Ford Falcon Performance Manual" that is a valuable resource for the Ford six owner available from one of the authors frequently on this site although I can't recall his username, someone will provide it.
What is the casting code on your 200, it may be one of the very desirable later large log heads.
There are items from your 170 you can sell to classic inlines as cores such as carb, rocker arms etc.

Excellent.

One inch BL looks real good to me.
What carb (the oe 1V Carter YF is pretty high for a bronk)?
Any suspension lift? Slotted oe 170 towers (mounts R rubber) & they took the 250? Or did U use the Mav 250 mount/tower?

AND his NV tranny fits (correct?). Any ford 'small block' 'neutral/internal balance' 164 T(ooth) FW wrks: 250, 289, 300, 302, 351. Take off the weights if U hafta. I gotta find the right clutch for my 250/3.03 combo as the early "just get it on the rd" iteration. I don't think the 170's will work. Any 1 know?

Thanks 4 ur help over the yrs -

Pic is on my desk top. Know how to upload to this site?
It's some kinda oe that sits BESIDE the valve cover on a peg offa the exhaust manifold.
