wasted timing chain

I had posted before about a possible timing set causing engine noise and the general consensus was valve adjustment. Well, I began pulling things apart to change some things on the engine and lo and behold, the chain is more than shot. I am able to rotate the crank the full range of the timing marks and then some without any movement in the dizzy or upper valve train!!! Looks like Mike will get some of my money this week for a double roller :lol:
 
Something doesnt sound right about that. Are you sure the front of the crankshaft is OK? I am wondering if the keyway is also severely worn. Also check the bolt that goes into the end of the crank for the balancer.
 
well, everything is tight-it just appears that the chain is done for(less than 10,000 miles) but I haven't treated it well...sounds extaordinary, but it seems like this is all it is.
 
Better double check the dowel pin on the camshaft. You might be buying a new cam too!

well, I happen to have at my diposal, a larger cam (used-low miles) that can be used if needed. i don't want to spend the money on head gaskets/lifters right now, but it just might be my excuse to go bigger :D
 
Darn it Will!!! Why do you have to have so much experience grenading these things?! I just finished teardown and the dowel pin was almost sideways in the gear and the gear is fractured! Luckily I caught it before it got real ugly and took out the engine :shock: Looks like I will be changing my order in Mike's favor.
 
John, I have that Clifford 272H cam with only about 5,000 miles on it sitting in my garage if you need it.

Unfortunately, I don't have the cam card for it. When it was first installed, it ran a bit loopy, but good. The second rebuild it ran rough, but I am convinced the shop that rebuilt the engine installed the cam retarded causing all those problems...
