Weiand Supercharged 300?

alright, its been sometime since i been to the computer now but i been doing soe talking, and now for a question, i opened my head up big time, im thinking i might have lowered the compression, maybe even too much, so what i want to know is, is this ideal for a supercharger, i have dished pistons also. now i have a few other upgrades... but i have always wondered how my 4.9 would handle with some boost, and i have only ever found weiand is there anyother? would a turbo be better suited?
 
Any supercharger or turbocharger will work but different types will work in different ways.

Positive displacement blowers like the Weiand add a constant boost at all RPM. That means that your 300 will act more or less like a 428. Of the various positive displacement blowers on the market, the Weiand is the oldest technology and probably the least efficient. The Eaton blowers are a much newer more efficient design and the Kenne Bell lysong blowers are reputedly better yet.

Centrifugal blowers like the Paxton and Vortec add increasing boost as RPMs increase. They are killer additions to a high revving 302 but probably not the best bet on a 300.

Turbos add boost on demand. Stick your foot in it, the turbo spools up and you have boost. There is some lag but a properly selected turbo and properly designed piping will minimize it.
 
I'm going with an Eaton M112 off a Lightning. These can be purchased much cheaper then most other superchargers ( $300-$700 ) . The down side they aren't designed to be used in a draw thru set up ( carb mounted on top air/fuel goes thru blower ) .

The question I have is are your dished pistons the stock cast pistons or are they a forged or hypereutectic piston? Because if they are the stock cast pistons I don't know how well they will hold up to the boost( and any detonation that comes with it ) .
 
well they are new, i know they are not forged, but not sure what they are. did i mention its an EFI motor? does that change anything? would you still rec. that same S/C? and is there anything i can do to my crank? to help with HP/TQ or boost? i mean can a machine shop do anything with it?
 
You would be taking a chance if they are cast pistons.

The crank doesn't need anything but to be in good shape with good bearings. If you want you could use some ARP main studs.

Yea I'd still recommend the same supercharger. But just realize this isn't a bolt on deal. It would require a lot of fabrication and you'll need some kind of tuneable EFI system. The stock system won't handle the change.
 
i do have ARP head bolts and mains, the motor is completly rebuilt and i made dramati changes to the motor to where i wouldnt dare try anything without 1st hooking up a Megasquirt. so it seems the only possible issue is the pistons, but is it going to be an issue even if not beating it or taking it over 3500rpm?
 
Well the stock cast pistons have been known to fail on a stock motor. I know you said your's are new but I still think you would be taking a chance. Now if you stick with low boost and have your fuel map perfect to start with you should be safe. :lol: Personally I wouldn't chance it on a fresh rebuilt motor . If it was a cheap junkyard engine I'd say go for it.
 
Your piston are your weak spot, you will throw the skirts off them the first time past 5k, there are a few alternatives, the m90 will also give you enough boost and cheap, watch ebay, I got mine for 280 dollars with all the pipes and intercooler and spent 100 bucks rebuilding the M90, good luck, with a positive displacement supercharger you will have bottom end like you won't belive.
 
One more thing, make sure you know exactly your compression ratio and have a custom cam ground for your needs, I suggest bullet cams, have all your info at hand for them.
 
Which Crane cam? You may or may not be OK. They recommend some fairly hot cams for use with a blower on a 302. It's all about lift (you want more) and overlap (you want less).
 
other mods to the motor- MSD coil and 6A ignition box, bored .030 over bigger TB, cold air intake, roller rockers, A/c delete, and electric fans, upper intake has very little work done to it. dual exhaust w/Xpipe and high flow cats. and i also have long tube headers and TB spacer, not sure if i should put them on because i was told these increase mid-high end rpm power, im kinda looking for low end only...
 
oh, also have 19 lb injectors, and still waiting to order a Megasquirt. and my reason for low end, is because i dont want parts bouncing all over the band im sure thats no good... or won't they hurt it that much?
 
oh wow, thats right up my alley than, i think i'd be happy with that little of boost. not looking for a race car. but i think 300hp should be alot easier this way hmmm thanks but something in the back of my mind tells me theres gonna be a catch somewhere along the line

Maybe those cast pistons? At 6-8 PSI you neither need nor want forged but hypereutectics are kinda, sorta mandatory. :cry:
 
maybe i'll hold off on the SC for a year or 2, but for my app. which would you rec.? being im only going to be looking to push like 6psi maybe 7
