What are the Log heads problems and Solutions

I hoped to understand why if this was such a poor design, why did Ford produce it for almost 30 years?...
From a production standpoint, it was a terrific design. Cheap, simple, and already designed.

Didn't make sense to sink a ton of money in their base-line engines that worked well as base-line engines. If you wanted power, you didn't buy a 6 - you'd go for the higher-tech V8's.

look at pics 2 and 3, you can see what the problem with the log is. this is a 77 head too, not even one of the earlier(smaller) ones. you can pull the freeze plugs and do some work with a rotary tool if you have some sort of extension. or you can do a 3x1 because it puts a carburetor right over the runners on the outside.

Doug,

Looked at your site and time slips. Did you ever run the car with the stock engine to get a comparison of original vs modified results?
Also, did that header fit without modifying anything?

Harry

Harry,

No I never did run it stock, but according to the info at the time a new 66 mustang with a 200 auto ran around a 20 to 20.5 second qtr mile @ 57 or so mph.

Header fit perfectly, no modifying at all if I remember right.

Cool! I'm starting my tri power project as soon as the parts arrive. I ordered a jet hot coated long tube dual header along with a mess of other stuff from CI last week. Mike says it's going in the mail tomorro (Monday). Since it looks like I blew a head gasket last week, I can get the tear down started in the mean time.

I was also interested in the "band" clamps you used on your header/inlet pipe connection. How do you get a full 360* seal using those? I plan to run up to Summitt next week to get some head bolt washers and if they stock the clamps I'll pick up a pair.

Thanks,

Harry

I dont know how they seal 360.....all I know is that they Do!

I brushed some anti seize on the pipes so that they slip on & off easily.

I bought mine at my local Car Quest store for around $8.00 a piece.
