What distributors will fit in an early 170 block?

Will any Ford small six distributor fit in any engine, or is there some early/late model difference? I'd really like to dump the Autolite 1100 carb and original Load-o-Matic dizzy for a later model dizzy (non-SCV) and a Weber progressive carb from Langdon's....

They're not compatible. The 170 hex drive is smaller than the 200. If you change the oil pump to a 200 oil pump, and cut a hex gear for it from some hex stalk, you can use a DSII or something like that. =)

8) what year 170? the early ones have a smaller shaft, and use a 1/4" drive shaft for the pump. after the first of the year in 1964 ford went to the large shaft and the larger 5/16" oil pump drive shaft. if you have the early block you have a few choices;

1: swap the points for the pertronix system. you dont lose the load-o-matic though.

2: you can contact addo, or xecute, or one of the other members from down under, and have them send you an electronic distributor from an aussie six. they use the early shaft size, but need the larger oil pump drive shaft.

3: you can ream out the guide hole in the block to allow for the larger late shaft. again you need to use the large oil pump drive shaft and the later oil pump.

Would there be a way to mate the LOM dizzy shaft and pump drive to a later dizzy or is that something that should be stayed away from?

It's called TIG. :lol:

You step one shaft to cut a "pilot" and counterbore the other at the base of the advance weight plate, braze or silver solder internally, turn a V-groove at the seam and TIG the periphery. For a competent machinist, about 40 minutes' work.

The final stage is a new bronze bushing in the housing bottom, reamed for the 490 thou shaft. Maybe 20 minutes there.

Cheers, Adam.
