I amlooking for a little more muscle under the hood of my 64 falcon

I want to stick with a I6 but am not sure whether it's worth it to swap the stock 170ci for a 200 or to try and build up the engine i have now?

I am 16 and short on cash so cost is a consideration

any advice?

Eddie

Use a 250 with a 2 barrel carb and a duraspark 2 ignition. The best of the cheapest set ups. More power than all the other falcon sixes.

i'm not so sure a 250 would be the best for a cheap build just because of the specific things you have to worry about with it
if there's no rush to do it, and you can take your time to find the necessary pieces to make it work then yeah, the 250 is probably your best bet
but if you don't have that time then i'd go with a 200

what's your budget, and is there any limit to how long the car can be out of commision?

Howdy Eddie and all:

I can relate to the "No money" blues. Given you're working on a '64 Falcon, I suggest you find a '76 to '78 donor with a 200 and trans you want, that was rear ended and otherwise in good shape. That will get you the complete engine trans package from fan to driveshaft and air cleaner to drain plug. Be sure to get the trans mount too, You will have to use an early pan and oil pump pickup. That combo will give you the latest head techology, the best ignition and a pretty good stock cam. Be sure to get the ignition module from the inner fender well.

This 200 combo will be a very nice upgrade from your 170. The only reason to keep and build the 170 is for specific class racing.

The 250 is 25% larger in displacement, but is also physically larger and you will have to deal with hood clearance and modified engine mounts.

That's my two cents, for what it's worth.

Adios, David

If you are going to have to go to the hassle of rebuilding an engine anyways and the one you are running runs okay -i would wait till i found a later model 200. Keep your eyes open and 1 will show up--i found a 78 200 right here in this forum for free with what appears to be an excellant short block.

I just got the falcon 6 performance handbook and it agrees with danwagons advice, a later model 200 is better. I guess i'll keep checking the forum for engines, maybe look on eBay too.

Thanks for the advice, you guys are great.

another often overlooked way to go is to buy a remanufactured engine. O'Riely's gets a little over $1000 dollars for a fresh 200 long block with a warrenty -no core charge. and you order ir as whichever year you want. Rebuilding one will cost near that much.

Don't know if anyone is interested or not, but I put a '78 250 in a 1964 Futura convertible. It works great. Very few problems and two big advantages - 1) lots more power with very little modification and 2) it burns no lead. No more lead additives to mix. I took out the old 170 (still available if anyone is interested) and Ford-O-Matic and replaced with the 250 combo. A little work with the mounts was about all it took. No clearance problems-on top or in front, although I did change fan spacer. I started in the fall of 2005 and after an upcoming paint job it will be on the road this spring. I haven't gone to the 5200 yet but that is my next project. I would recommend this swap for anyone looking for more without going to a V8. It was well worth the effort.

A 250 swap sounds nice. I've always wondered though, if you upgrade to the 250ci, are you burning as much gas as a small block Vee Eight in the long run? I'd imagine with two less cylinders you still get better MPG, but cubic inches are cubic inches, physics would say you burn more right?

Thanks for the tip on the engine, I won the auction and will picking up the motor on a few days
