what is the compression psi on a 170

someone told me that if the compression is bad that i can run some borax soap through a vac port to internally hone it out and restore comp it sounds like b/s but a couple of people told me the same thing :hmmm:

8) it is complete bravo sierra. all running a little borax through the engine will do is wear out the cylinder walls, and possibly create bearing damage. the only way to properly restore compression is to rebuild the engine.

Thats on the low side, especially if it was recently run. Sounds like you just have a worn out motor. Time to rebuild it or find another one.

i have a 200 i building with a turbo but i just hope i can run the 170 till its done it still runs very well with good power but it has well over 300000 miles on it if not more being almost 50 years old but yeah im not surprised

the comp readings i was getting varied from 90 to 100 psi

That is on the low side.

Are you burning any oil?

When you did the compression check did you have all the plugs removed, the throtle wide open, a good fully charged battery, and a good starter motor.

At 300000 it is not surprising that the compression is low but with those reading I would expect a lot of blow by, oil burning and plug fowling.

If not then I would change the oil often, 2000 miles, and don't put any undue pressure on the engine and it might last.

That engine has given you some perty good service to get to 300000 miles.
