It's a condenser, usually mounted on the back of the alternator. Supposed to take some of the interference out of the wiring and improve radio reception. There's probably another one mounted on your voltage regulator, but it doesn't really matter. Not needed (IMO). I use an FM converter with my original radio, and can't tell any difference after I took mine off. Of course, the wire was broken anyhow.

Hey Wallaka, I'm interested in what you said about your FM converter. I haven't heard of those before. Is that something you hook up to the old AM?

Yep, it's an FM tuner that ouputs an AM signal. It's attached to the antenna input of the original radio, and the original radio is tuned to a specific frequency.

I don't know where you would find one today, maybe JC Whitney? This one has been installed for 30 years or more.

Ah,FM Converters. I DO have that Radio-Shack/Realistic job under the dash of one of my Nova's...still works fine after all these years(it was there when I got the Car..). I have a hoard of these things in boxes. I love my Dork-Accessiores :P . ~OO6.
