My manual says when installing new main and rod bearings to clean everything and then to apply a coating of clean motor oil and assemble. Is this the way you guys do it or do you use something special like assembly grease?

What ldj1002 said. Lubriplate and the like won't mix with the oil and gobs will be floating around for months.
STP and motor oil for engine assembly.
Vaseline for transmission assembly.

The back of the shells, and their "beds" should be meticulously clean, dry and free of oil residue. It's the rubbing face you want to lube. Proper assembly lube is oil soluble (as is moly grease) so you can use these.

Bedding in the crank end seals by a good number of crankshaft rotations before rods are fitted, is always advised.

Your block assembly should finish at #1 TDC firing. If all your ducks are in line, it will start with just a few turns... None of these "Got it back together and now it won't start" posts, OK?
