Which cam do I need?

I want a mid range cam, but I don't understand the numbers...

I need something that is dependable and can be driven in traffic (if needed), but will also will be able to cook somewhat. I know that I can't have the best of both worlds (i read the tech article @ classic inlines).

I will appreciate any help!

JW, what size engine do you have?
Also what transmission is in your vehicle?? Bill

I don't know why I didn't mention that!

I have a stock 1965 200ci bottom end, a rebuilt 1980 head, Holley 2bbl 350 cfm carb, upgraded to electronic ignition, and a dual outlet header.

The drive train is compiled of a 72 maverick 8" rear end (or whichever the 4 lug came on) and a ford 3.03 tranny with adaper to a 2.77 bell. The gears in the rear are very high (2.79) but I will be switching soon to a T5 4cyl transmission to hopefully bring down the overall ratio. It is too expensive for me right now to spend $800 on a 3rd member with lower gears.

That should give you a pretty good picture. This is my first project, so I am open to hearing suggestions.

Is the carb via an adaptor (2 into 1) or direct mount? Any head work or oversized valves (currently or planned)? Compression ratio (currently or planned)?

the carb is a direct mount. we have custom made a mounting bracket that is between the log (milled flat) and the carb. the head as i said is a 1980 with 302 springs and stock valves... I'm unsure of the compression ratio (I don't know how to find it, I'm still learning) but I know that we milled .070 off of the stock 250 head.

JW, i believe the 264 camshaft with a 110 lobe center would be perfect for your application. Since you have stock exhaust valve size another choice would be the 264I-274E @ 110 lobe center.

Either cam will bring your engine alive. Bill

Not to steer anything from Mike, but Comp Cams makes a nice 260H cam for a mild daily driver. It's what I'm using and I'm happy with it. Nothing crazy, mostly just more lift so the engine still runs smooth without much loopyness (is that a word?).

Granted, if Mike had cams when I bought mine, I would have gone with one of his instead.

I hate to steal a thread but while were talking cams. are there any good book's manuals, or tech materials you would recommend concerning cams and how they affect performance/drivability. I just keep hearing alot of number being thrown around and would like to understand what cam to pick under what conditions. I plan on doing a complete rebuild and would like to beable to figure out what cam i need for my finished project.

wow that sounds like most of what i need to know. thanks. When i get to the point where i'm rebuilding i'll bug every one again with exact specs. thanks :D
