What is the part number for the plugs with the longer tip that is discussed? I checked at work today and the parts lister are motorcraft 631 or Bosch super 7551, but I can't find any referance to electrode lengths.........

Ok, I will just wait till my buddy is working then....... parts at Ford here just gives you a funny look (but then again when you ask for sometihng as simple as mercon V you get the same dazed stare.....)and autozone only my buddy will actually use a book to look anything up....

Thanks man, I ended up getting them but I don't know the part number (I forgot and threw the boxes away and forgot to record the number.......

the car had never missed a beat but the plug gaps where almost closed by soot which proves that it is running rich as I thought.

The part number is also stamped on the metal part of the plug's side.

Yeah I know but I am not planing on pulling them back out, but if anybody needs it I get it for you when I get time.

I know I got extended tips from Autozone when I asked just for the standard Autolite copper plugs. I found out when #1 plug kept getting hit by the piston and closing the gap to almost nothing.

Ohhh........ well that doesn't appear to be happening to me....... maybe I have more P/V clearance for some reason???

I have used autolite single platinium AP-46, accel 378, & NGK WR51X #7510 iridium plugs. All these plugs have given excellent performance. The cost of the ngk iridium is expensive but the small electrode works great. Only way is to run them on the track or dyno. On the street its hard to tell a difference. the ngk's seem to be more responsive.
I have no experience with bosch. I know many of you members have used bosch with positive results. Great. at the dealership we have pulled many a bosch plug out & have cured many of driveability problems by just getting rid of the bosch plugs. I stand corrected if they work in the 200 six. Any other engine i have been in contact with, bosch plugs have been a looser. Just my opinion & experience. If you own a VW bug they work great. Thats what they were designed for. To each his own. I don't know about the longer tip plugs, but I have noticed the Bosch plugs don't seem to perform as well as the Autolites.

After reading the threads on performance coils, I noticed a lot of folks are using Bosch platinums. I put a coil on a while ago, and I was running Autolite coppers.

I figured I'd go with the Bosch and give them a shot. I don't think they perform as well as the Autolites. It seems more sluggish with the Bosch plugs, and my mileage is slightly lower as well. But that's just seat of the pants feel. Same gap, same heat range.

The Autolites feel more responsive, and the engine seems to warm up and run better. I noticed the same thing on my AMC. It ran crappy with Bosch, but great with Autolite. Go figure.

Just my experience, your mileage may vary. I don't think there is anything wrong with Bosch. I get better results with Autolite. I agree, to each his own. I use whatever works.

could all depend on individual setup...liek a carb running on teh rich side might run better on a certain plug...etc

Maybe I will try a set of autolite coppers and see

I agree, chaz, it could all depend on the engine setup. My 82 is all stock, with a stock Holley 1946, set to specs. I have read where some guys say you can set it a little leaner with a hotter coil. Haven't tried it yet.

The only thing not stock is the Accel coil. I'm using the regular Motorcraft ignition module, stock cap, rotor and 8mm wires.

At least the Autolites are cheap enough to just throw a set in to try them. It ran OK with Bosch, it just feels like it runs a little better with the Autolites. I'm sure I'll find the coppers won't last as long as the platinums, but I don't mind wrenching on it from time to time, it's good therapy.

I can't seem to get much life out of the Autolites, regular or platinum. They foul easily in cylinders 3 & 4, although the only way I notice is a slight drop in MPG. I'll usually find them this way after a long (100+) mile hiway trip at 70+ MPH, which suggests they overheat then and die later, because the idle will be well over 1000 RPM at the end of the trip for about 15 minutes of city driving, when it settles back down to the normal 750... Recently I started using Champions because of the lack of stock at the local store, and am surprised so far: they last longer, much longer (!). Power seems to be the same.

Champs have never been my favorite, but hmmm....
