Who knows about turbos and propane

Anyone here have any details on using propane with the turbos?

So far need a tank, converter, mixer, hose, filter, shut-off (whether vacuum or electric)...anything else?

Heard you need to reference the atomospheric side of the mixer before the butterflies so don't run out at higher rpms.

Make sure your timing comes in quick (which I have already done) and it seems you can bump the timing up due to the higher octane rating of propane.

Safer than gasoline and (now this is to my advantage) the engine can run in any angle (just like EFI).

Anything else or something I am missing? Appreciate it fellers, thanks.

Kirk, you might want to sign up for FullBoost just to browse some of the turbo setups. A modest number of people here run propane ("LPG") turbos. There are a couple of nice throttle bodies available, too.

So far need a MONSTROUS tank,

fixed it for ya!

Thanks Linc, if I went this route I was going to stack two 10 gallon tanks in the back of the bronco and lose the original fuel tank. That ought to put me just about the same in total mileage as the stock 12 gallon fuel tank.

Then I stop and thought, just do a dual fuel set-up. Cheaper, less hassle, only need one tank then, and the extra total mileage I could achieve from the bronco w/ both fueling systems combined. I could use the propane for the trails and then switch back to gasoline for the open road. I dig it!

From what I have learned so far hood clearence is the main issue.
Anyone have anything else to add that might be an issue?

What about shutting off the gasoline fuel pump when I switch to run propane? I am getting a bypass regulator, would that be enough (with a large return line) to still keep the mech. fuel pump, or do I need an electric? I am still reading up on the facts.

Appreciate any advice.

Dual fuel is not a performance choice. It assures you of indifferent results with two fuels. The more sophisticated your engine management system is, the less loss in performance.

Was searching around the web and came across www.dualcurve.com (and they are here in El Paso, Texas) and they sell a timing recurve for the lpg/gasoline dual-fuel setup.
Reading thru the instructions it advances the timing for the swtich to lpg @ 15 degrees and then when switched back to gasoline, flip the toggle, and it is back down to the regular timing setting.

Now I was thinking, doesn't the Ford ignition module have a white wire that retards the timing for startup?
There you go, have a toggle switch with 12volts to the white wire for gasoline timing, and flip the toggle switch off for lpg. You would have to set your timing with the switch in the "ON" position, providing 12 volts to the white wire at the ignition module.

What do you think?

Ak Miller was the man for this. Hot Rod had several articles in the mid to late 70s on this very issue (dual fuel/turbo).
