will a head off a ford I6 170 fit a ford I6 250

if anyone know if a 170 is swappable with a 250 please let me know.

i was a the wrecker looking for a head with a detachable intake and i found a merc. bobcat that had been customized. it had a thicker head than normal with a header but the intake came off the left of the motor and had a double barrel carb on it.

if any one knows if it will fit please tell me and if it does ill go get it. thanx

if it's cheap enough, it might be a good idea to grab it even if it doesn't fit, ebay or here might fetch a good price for it

by left hand, do you mean driver's side, or passenger side?

the intake and carb are on the drivers side but all the other ford I6's are on the passenger side. The parts are fairly cheap since theyre frome a wrecker and they look pretty decent so i guess i could buy it and then sell it if it doesnt fit, i just was trying to avoid spending cash if i could because it could go to other mods on the car.

Unless its a crossflow (how would it have gotten to BC?) the motor is most likely a 223. The 215/223/262 series engines were the only ford sixes to have the intake/exhast on the driver's (left) side, much like the chevy sixes. Here's the link to my website, it might help:

i went to the tech pages ( i just figured out how to get there ) and under the crossflow chronicles they have a picture of what the system looked like on the bobcat. if it is a 223 than the guy who owned the bobcat also liked I6's enough to go through the process of getting the engine and all that. Thanx 63redtudor your site also helped. I think i am conviced that i must get it before someone else does.

Whoa! The 215/223/262 family engines do not interchange with the 144/170/200/250 family. If you plan to buy the head and use it on a 170, it won't work. The crossflow 250 and the 215/223/262 are also not interchangeable.

Note also the crossflow 250 head will not work on the domestic 200/250 without being properly modified by a competent machine shop. Check out the Crossflow chronicles and the Locost project elsewhere on this site for more detailed info.

If it's a crossflow 250, you need the whole engine (I'd snag the tranny too), not just the head. What do you intend to use this head/engine for?

If it is a 215/223/262, there is no reason to buy this as it has absolutely nothing in common with the 144/170/200/250 other than being made by Ford. Sort of like trying to use big block ford heads on a small block. IMO, you would be wasting your money.

i have a I6 250 in my '78 mercury monarch and all i want right now is a used head with a detachable intake. the intake on my hfead is a fixed single carb. I noticed on a site that someone brought in a head like mine and got it surface planed so he could bolt on a plate that he designed himself to hold two single carbs or another plate that could use a 4 bbl carb. it sounds fairly simple, should i do that rather than buy a new head and intake.

It's quite easy to tell if it's the crossflow head, as opposed a 223 etc.

1. The intake and exhaust are on opposite sides to each other. Intake on the driver's.

2. The valve cover is wider and flatter than the integral, non-crossflow heads, and the gasket surface on the bottom edge of the cover is NOT angled to one side.

3. Removing the valve cover will reveal not shaft rockers, but individual rocker arms on mounting studs.

Trueslayer - You need to visit this page http://fordsix.com/crossflow.htm and get a good mental image of what a crossflow is before you go spending your hard earned dollars. They were not available in North America, so unless you found one that someone else imported, I seriously doubt you are looking at one in the junk yard. However, anything is possible.

my friend is coming with a digital camera that he's not sure if it works after the dog ate off the front. but if it works i'll get some pics and it should then be easier to identify. i took a look at the xflow pages and it looks quite similar to wut was at the yard.
