Hey guys...
havign some issues...
I'm looking to get a fuel cell as my fuel tank is crap...
They are pretty cheap from VPW but dont come with senders...
I was thinking about using the ZL sender, but i dont know much about it (yet)...
Does anyone know the resistance range of the ZL/XF sender ? also does it incorpertate a fuel light switch ??
I know it has 3 wires going to it, which seems to be power and ground and level, which suggests no low fuel light/switch....

Help ??

Thanks,
CamZH

PS cant use the original sender as its a boom type and i'm looking at a foam filled cell.

Hello! The XD-XF sensors are a good whilst they work.... until moisture or old age kills them. The last time I checked Ford still had some of them new for about $130. Anyway, they work like this : 12v and ground and the output which is at about 0volts for empty and about 4.5volts full. They are quite linear (ie if a 72l tank is half full you will get about 2.2volts). If it was me I would use an old style float sender (you can buy them new for about $50).

Enjoy!

I dont really have the option of using a float type sender with the foam filled cell...

I'll check the ohm range on the zl/xf sender myself...
I'll post results...

Camzh... I think you misunderstood my posting on the XF senders... They DO NOT have any resistance output to fuel level! They are electronic, and use (I think) the fuel level as a dielectric for a capacitor formed by a couple of copper strips in the sensor. Maybe the longer sedan senders will do the job for you - the closer the sensor is to the bottom of the tank the closer the accuracy will be : the come in various lengths depending on the tank (eg wagon, ute, sedan). PM me if you need more info.

Hey Wagon,
I didnt realise they worked that way !

Might still be able to use it... The voltage output might me useable.. maybe i can get it to just operate the guage in a normal fashion ?

But i might not need to, i'm chasing a guy who is wrecking a EL ute and trying to get the tank out of that ! Then i dont need to work about fancy fuel tanks or pump setups !

Don't suppose you know if the EL tank is plastic and has a moulded filler ??

thanks,
Cam

EL ute? XH utes and vans have steel tank and not a moulded filler. They're basically the same tank as the earlier model commercials but with an electric fuel pump.

I would say no to the xf sender working a normal resistance gauge -since the xf gauge is really a voltmeter. But I reckon the xh ute tank will have a normal float sender! Should be easy to get that to work with older gauges!

Kendall.

Ok well ditch the idea about the after market tank and the surge tank etc..

I got the EL/(XH?) tank today ! What is this thing? i Thought it was a EL, is it a XH ??

now i just need to figure out the wiring and see if i can use the fuel level sender in the tank with my guage !

thanks,
Cam

XH, bro, XH!

No, the front suspension and body panels don't fit an EL. Not even close. Chassis rails and front track is wider than the EL, while the inner guards were a hald breed. The lenght forward of the doors was reduced on the EA-EL line to adopt a Cab Forward design. The utes used the long hood design fropm the first XR's in 1966. The suspension is wierd, more like the EL.

Ford had a cost cutting habit with utes, vans and wagons. The XH is sort of like a TF Cortina Wagon or Mark 2 Escort Wagon, or a Sigma Wagon. It uses the previous models back half, with the modern vehicles front. The windows width and body was the same behind the A-pillar. I guess Fordand Mitsubishi think we are too stupid to notice, and guess what? We are!

Bless old Henry. Since Ford were such tight wads, it makes it criminally simple to shove late model bits in early Falcons!

All X-car utes from 1966 to 1999 were put on the same basic chassis!

Fords first burst proof HDPE fuel tank hit the town in 1979 on the sedans, but the wagons and utes never got plastic tanks untill about 1999. Steel tanks remained the similar from the XA right up to XH, I think. It was designed to sit in the same floor space of an XA to XF wagon floor, becasue utes, wagons and Fairlanes used the same chassis from 1966 untill 1982.

Hey Guys !
Got the XH tank in this weekend ! works a treat !!
Only issuse is the fuel guage is backwards !!

Now i have a ute that the more i drive, the more fuel i get !!
Woo!!
