So we have been talking about re-curving distributors. Now is the time to maybe take some action.

Here is my distributor...
<img src=http://www.image-hosting.net/images/messageboard/jbowhall/DSCN0449.jpg>

It is an Autozone special, and it was taken as listed for a 79 Fairmont 3.3L...
I ran this one in the engine before I rebuilt it, only about seven weeks...
it has been kept well for the past few months.

we have all been talking about working these things to eliminate Ported Vacume Advance and to dial in more initial+mechanical advance.

I am running the 350cfm 2300 on this with a MSD 6...
So what can I do to make this work... or is it as simple as plug the ports and bump initial up to 12 degrees. Don't I need to do something else?

Should I even worry about this...
the 2300 has a clearly labeled Timed Spark Vacume Port, but I have no idea how much vacume it will pull....

And lastly a stupid question... with the 2300... there is an adjustment in here for a transmission kickdown lever and spring install... lists it as a Ford application, I assume this is for an automatic transmission and I should leave it blocked off..I know, but I had to ask....

I know I sound like an idiot... I am!

Thanks

Jimbo,

To recurve the dizzy to mechanical only correctly, you need to plug the vacuum ports, set your initial timing, and then see what advance you are at at 3200 RPM. If you are above 36* BTDC, then you need to pull the existing springs from bottom part of the dizzy (under the mag. distributor) and replace the mechanical advance springs to a heavier spring.

The other way, easier and probably more common, is to do what you said, plug the vacuum ports on both sides, and just advance your initial advance to the point you get 32-36* BTDC at 3000 RPM.

Plug the tranny ports since you are going with the T5.

Good luck.

Jimbo:
I am running the Holley 2300 with MSD and a DurasparkII dizzie. I connected thevacuum from the carb to the distributor and it works really well. FWIW.

Hi Jimbo,

Mechanical is the way to go. The all-in advance will be controlled by the limit on the advance weights in your DSII. Weights control amount of advance and springs control rate of advance. The sight below shows a good picture of the weights in a dual advance dizzy. However, the system in the DSII is the same. I recommend a 10* weight limit. This will give you 20* at the crank (dizzy turns 1/2 crank speed). 20* degrees of mechanical advance plus your initial will get you where you need to be. I use initial of 18*, for 38 all-in. Runs great, no ping. I would check the weights in your dizzy before install. If you put it in the car and check the all-in with a dial back lite and find it is too much you will have to pull the whole thing again. Check first, install, plug the ports in the dizzy and the carb and you're set. You will never need to wounder what is going on with timing again.

The kick down, you don't need it.

Really looking forward to hearing how she runs when your done - Steve

I would love to check but I am not clear on how to remove the weights and the rest of the top stuff to get in there....

Jimbo,

I saw a site that provided the detail you want. It was attached to a recent post related to adjusting the advance in a DSII. I will see if I can find it. Failing that, you should be able to find something on amazon.
