I have a friend wjo is going to pull a 170 out of his wifes 67 Mustang. He has a 65 200 that he is planning to rebuild. The car has a c4 in it and he was wondering if there would be any issues using the c4 behind this single pattern 200?

Should be a bolt in , why was there a 170 in a 67 ? , have fun

for info:

I have a 170 that was OEM 1971 in a Maverick. It has a C8DE block and D0DE head from factory.

had fun

The 170 was never offered in the 67 Mustang.
The 200 was the base engine for that year.

I'm still tryin 2 figure out what a "single pattern" engine is
AND
"to pull a 170 out of"
makes me think it WASN'T - didn't hafta be oe.
"doubbble confusion non-'stang owner's condition".

A single pattern engine was the 144-200 up to 65 , after that they had Dual patterns on the bell housing flange , new will retrofit old , but old only fits new IF its an Automatic application as the C-4 bell stayed the same older pattern ,and then in 69 the 250 put the SBF pattern in the mix as well along with the early 80's weird 200 bell

Thanks rocklord & FSD!
that explains alot (of my earlier ford confusion).

why does everyone say the 170 was not in the 67 Mustang, I too have a 67 coupe with the 170 in it. could these few Mustangs be flukes?

Check out your Vin code the Fifth Digit = Engine

Engines offered in 1967 Mustangs
T 6 Cyl. 200 CID, 1 barrel carburetor this was the base engine offered for a 67 Mustang.
C 8 Cyl. 289 CID, 2 barrel carburetor
A 8 Cyl. 289 CID, 4 barrel carburetor
K 8 Cyl. 289 CID, 4 barrel carburetor (high performance)
S 8 Cyl. 390 CID, 4 barrel carburetor

Only the early 1965 Mustangs that came out in 1964 1/2 had the 170 as the base engine they also used a Generator too. Ford decided to upgrade to the 200 six as the standard base engine for the rest of the 1965 Mustang run. But after 45 years of use who knows someone could have easily bolted in a 170 as well as several other engines in place of what it had originally. It's quite rare for these old Fords to still have the engine it was built with IE has correct casting and date codes for build date (or be numbers matching).

I think that if you look on the flat area of the block above the oil filter, you will find an assebly date code for the engine. The first number and letter will tell you when the engine was assembled. For example, my Dec '64 built 200 starts with "4 M ..." meaning the engine was assembled in Dec 1964. That should answer if it's original or not. Also, short of pulling it apart, or seeing the generator vs alternator, how can you tell the difference between the 170 and 200?

Count the soft plugs.. 3 softplugs = 144/170 (or rare 4 bolt mail 200) 5 softplugs = 200 or 250, and then to separate the 200/250 look at the waterpump. 3 bolts is a 200 4 bolts is a 250.
