For some info check my site:
For a down & dirty check, where is your distributor located? If its in the center of the block (on the passenger side by the way), its a 215. If its between the #1 & 2 cylinders then its most likely a 223 (could be a 262, but unlikely). If its the original engine then it will be a 215, the 223 came out in '54. Hope this helps.

215 vs. 223

Telling the 215 from the 223 is very easy. The motor mounts were moved when the 223 was brought out in '54. if your motor mounts are toward the front of the engine and your distributor is near the middle, you have a 215. If your motor mounts are near the middle and the distributor is near the front, you have a 223. You should have a 215.
