had a 62 170/2 speed fordo removed and a used 65 200/c4 3 speed installed, and running into a couple of issues.

  1. Car seems to run okay, but it overheats only on speeds over 65mph, after driving for a bit.
  2. speedometer/odometer stopped working after the swap. Mechanic claims he put in the stock cable into the c4 Assy.

Some weird things that the mechanic did (found out after the fact):

  1. reused the stock Holley 1909 instead of the Autolite 1100.
  2. used the 62 170 1/4" shaft distributor instead of the 65 200 5/16". Dunno how he got it to work.

Car started overheating on the freeway driving home, after about 30 miles. Mechanic said it was fine driving around town in 100 degree weather. Pulled over and there was steam coming out of the overflow hose, and coolant was low. Added water, tried test driving it, and it stayed cool, under 1/2, even at highway speeds. mechanic told me he didn't think it would come back, so kept driving home at about 65mph.

about 15 more miles of highway driving, it starts overheating again. pulled over, and this time it lost about 1 gallon of water. mechanic comes by, drives home at about 50 mph for about the 35 miles back to his shop, and it doesn't overheat.

Mechanic said he had already pressure tested the cooling system. He said he'll change out the thermostat (he didn't initially), replace the radiator cap, and water pump is new. Radiator was stock copper recored by previous owner.

So what might be causing the overheating, and why is the speedo/odo not working?

Late ignition timing at high load/rpm can cause overheating.
Insufficient radiator capacity or restricted water or airflow. Bad radiator cap. Thermostat.
