Hello all I just wanted to know if anyone on here has a nice 144. I have one and it seems like i should just put a small amount of money into just getting it to run right. Ya know new 2 barrel carb and adapter new pipes. Something to get in running right, it runs now but not very good...Anyway just want to if there is anyone that has done that...JAKE

it runs now but not very good...

Do you mean it don`t have very much power or that it runs rough ?

New points , cap , rotor , carb rebuild , tune the carb, new spark plugs and new plug wires would make it run better...

Seems to me like a 144 could be a very nice engine. Doesn't it have a shorter stroke than the 200? If so, you could take cautious advantage of the revvability to bring out a littlemore spirit. Without going overboard, you could do a FSPP header into a bigger exhaust (2" would probably be ample), a pertronix ignition in your stock distributor with a hot coil, and a stock single barrel from a 200 ( I think that would just bolt right on in place of your current carb). Combine it with a good tune-up as mentioned above and I think you will be very happy without having to spend too much money.

PS. The reason I don't think you need to go to the complication of converting to a two barrel is that using a single barrel from a bigger engine, like the 200, rebuilt and modified by someone like pony carbs, should yield as much volume as your engine can take without the hassle that many of us have gone through.

I have had many problems with the carb. I have had the first one rebuilt twice, then they gave me a new one and it doesnt seem to run good either. The problem is when i step on the pedal, I understand the power isnt there but its worse than that sometimes its just cuts out on me..Not sure what to do people say go to a 289/302, the others say rebuild a 200/w-c-4 but not sure i have money now and i'm not a big engine guy i just want it to run good so I can put effort into the body the interior. Thanks for all the help...Jake

P.S. pony carbs whos that ??? where are they located?

When was the last time you gave it a tune up ? (plug wires ect.)

i dont have many miles on it at all. i have only had the chero for about a year, only drove it to work and back a few times. and it doesnt move at work but every third day..anyway i probabely need to go through everything again....jake since i rebuilt the engine i only have around 1200 miles on it

The carb on my 170 was from a 144 from a 1960 Falcon. I rebuilt the carb and it works fine. Maybe your distributor has a bad vacuum advance. Mine had a leaky diaphram that I replaced with a good used one. That will cause a hesitation and poor power.

As is often the case, the answers is only a Google search away  .

Make sure your fuel pump is working properly and give the car a good tune up. Check or vacuum leaks and use a vacuum pump to check that the vacuum advance on your distributor is working properly. If the problem persists after that it is likely the carb.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the stock carbs, otehr than being 40 years old, so switching to a weber is not necessary. A well rebuilt stock-style carb should be fine. Check out the pony carbs 1101 or something like that. That's a lot of carb for the 144.

hey, i have a '62 falcon 144, w/ the same problem, i just had it rebuilt last year, and it hesitates and wants to/ will stall if u give it decent throttle, i have a good mechanic, and we have gone all through everything, and the only thing we can come up w/, is that the accelerator pump is too small, causing it to quit, were currently making an adaptor and adding a weber 2 barrel, which should hopefully solve the problem, but another problem is todays gas, and the octane being so much lower than when our cars were made, and especially with the small sixes, you notice it a lot more than w/ a V8, all i run is premium, and if i had the money, id run a load of race gas (105 octane) in it, which would make it run like a top, but i dont have the $5.50 a gallon to buy it, and thoes octane boosters are junk and a waste of time. when i get the 2 barrel on, ill post a reply with wether it worked or not, and if u have any ideas or new info, please share!

I have a 1960 Comet 4dr with the Merc-O-Matic. Some of may have followed around a year ago and into last winter when I had drug this low mileage car out of a field in WI and replaced the floors.
The eng is a 144 with the Holley 1904 on it. I had a lot of problems in the beginning with running rough, back firing and all. Rebuilt twice, second time hot tanked. Installed a replacement "overhauled" 1904 still no remedy. Found a NOS 1908 on eBay one day and one the bid. I believe the 1908's are for the 170cid. It had a noticably larger venturi and I had to convert the aut choke to manual. Bolted it on and have been driving ever since. Really, she has good power, considering the 2 speed auto and all. Eng accelerates briskly and I even registered an indicated 80mph on the old speed-O on west bound 90 out of Chicago.
My only problems up to this point, with lots of city driving are a discharging condition that is only apparent under speeds of 15-20mph (its the generator I know) and a slip in the trans when coming to a yield and re-accelerating. IF ANYONE HAS A CLUE TO THIS PLEASE LET ME KNOW! I think (hope) its a vacuum problem and not internal issue!
