I tracked my miles on the last tank of gas and I went 178 miles on 10.5 gallons. That's about 17 MPG. I was curious what other people in the forum are getting with simliar setups. I'm running a holley 2300 2bbl 500cfm on an aussie head. This is city driving. I tried to drive normal and did most of the time plus on this particular tank of gas I was still doing some carb tuning so I'm confident that this next tank will be more like 18 or 19 in the city which I would think is pretty decent considering the mods.

Let me know what you guys are getting.

Yup that's all city driving. I think this next tank will be better cause I was still tunning the carb and had drained the float bowl to change the power valve. Plus I hit a few times.

Anyway, I got the carb dialed in and with a little more restraint I think this tank will be 18 or 19 in the city.

yeah...390 carb...hehe

I found my biggest impact on my mileage was me. Before the aussie...no power, great mileage. Now: Power and no mileage. Not because of the mod, but because I just can't help punching the gas. That, and my exhaust sounds just wicked at WOT!

Slade, I have the same problem. Restraint from punching it is not always easy. Not sure how I'm going to handle myself with a T-5 and 4.11 gears. Not only will my gas mileage suffer but tires are going to get expensive. LOL

my all but stock (pertronix I ignition) 67 coupe gets 25+ mpg! just crusing around.the guys at work made fun of me for buying a "SORRY SIX" until gas prices shot up ...who's laughing now??

I'm with Slade, I just love that sound!

WOT with the headers and 50s with the Aussie 4V sounds like a freaking straight pipe race car. it just roars all the way to the rev limiter. I think I have scare people with it before. It's fun pulling beside Honda's with it. Even if I do lose, I put the fear of God in them to ever try again (or maybe that's my driving that puts the fear of god into them...hmm...)

on my trip to lake forest which is near santa ana but like 7 miles south of that, I went from a gas station just outside of bakerfield to lake forest and back to that gas station plus about 40 minutes of city/highway driving, and did it all with I think 13 gallons, I think. looks like my car which more than 2 years ago that got 17 mpg on the highway not get possibly 24 mpg. since my rear tires plus axle are different then a conventional 6, the gear ratio not to mention the speedomether and odometer gears have not been changed. so if I am going 50 miles an hour on the gauge I am really going 60+, same for the odometer I figured it that if I am go 10 miles in real life I only go 8.5-8.6 on the gauge.

anyways, my car is just so screwed up, I also blew out my right rear tire on the trip, it just blew to pieces like a balloon, didnt punture it it just blew from the outside area of the tire. I will show a pic if anyone wants to see, just tell me how again can I post a pic on here I forgot, its been so long.

anyways, in the city that I can think of I am really getting more than 13.5 mpg I m getting possibly 15-15.5. not bad mostly done by carb exchange, wires, muffler, and coil nothing else since I got the car 4.5 years ago.

Well I've gone through another tank of gas and it looks like 17MPG is the best it's going to get in the city. I will have to take a trip to Tucson shortly and checkout the highway mileage.

What power valve do you have?

For most of the part, a 500 Holley on a 200 will have poor gas velocity, and poor vacuum. The 2v has massive intake ports which are over sized on a 250, let alone a nice little 200!

The power valve is an auxilary richeing device which is equal to going up 8 main jet sizes on both jets. Most V8 Holley 500's have 10.5 or 8.5 power valves. In its normal 283 to 460 environment, there is heaps and heaps of vaccum around to ensure the power valve hardly ever opens.

On a 200 six, there is less vacum. You have lost half the cubic inches Holley designed the carb for. When the part throttle vacuum is below about 8.5 inches of mercury ("Hg) on a vacum gage, the 8.5 power valve will drop extra fuel into the intake manifold. Up to 10 teaspoon fulls a minute.

Lets look at a stock #4412 500 cfm Holley on a 200 2V, and another in a 351 2V Mustang. Power vave is the stock 8.5. Ambling around town, keeping up with the Accords, the six cyl car will be at about 8.5"Hg often. A 8.5 power valve will be close to opening. The 351 2v with a 500 would be reading 10.5" hg. If you have a 4.5 power valve, it will drop fuel in later, and make it more economical. Most of the time, it will be very lean, but when you stomp on it, it'll richen out like a race car. 90% of the time, it will run with no power valve at all.

The solution?

Easy. Go for a power valve which opens late (low number), and very lean main jetting (low number). Any holes in the fuel delivery can be taken up by bigger pump jets squirters. 31's or 34's instead of 25's or 28's.

The key to making the 200 run leaner is starting with a very small main jets, and a very rich power valve. A set of 63's with a 4.5 power valve will do better for economy than a set of 68's with an 8.5 power valve.

so which carb will provide that lean idle and big power valve? I am looking forward to the next upgrade which will be the intake breeathing problem. I still like my original idea to go with the offenhauser three carb and weber ich's.

Best I've got was 10-12 mpg...but then my normal, everyday driving is rather aggressive!

xtaxi, I'm pulling around 11hg of vacum at idle and running the stock 5.0 powervalve. For a bit I tried running a 2.5 powervalve and it was terrible. When you hit the gas anywere from 1/4 to 1/2 throttle after the intial squirt of gas from the accl pump wore off the engine would hesitate and run real rough. I hooked up a vacum gauge and went for a drive and basically at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle the vacum was dropping to around 5. Not enough for the 2.5 valve to open and start feeding the engine the extra gas it needed. So I put the 5.0 powervavle that the carb came with back in and it runs much better now. If anything I would go to a 5.5 or 6 powervalve.

Oh yeah almost forgot I went up from 28 discharge nozzles to 31. I tried 34's but didn't notice any improvement and went back to 31's. Initially I had hesitation when you first hit the gas no matter how far you opened the throttle. With the 31 nozzle the initially hesitation went away and then running the 5 powervavle fixed the other problems.

So then what is wrong with my 76 Maverick 250 and carter YF-A that I only get 17-18mpg at 75 mph on the highway? I mean it has the mpg 2.79 axle and C-4. Can I toss in an AOD behind it to improve mpg?

I get about 15 mpg reagrdless of premium or regular. I drive real easy though, no hard starts as it is a real Sunday Cruiser.

Cheers,
Steve-O
