So I just finished my journey from Washington to California. My Falcon didn't like it. It ran great but the 170 and 2sp weren't happy going over the pass or up any hills for that matter. Of course the 1500lb trailer I had attached didn't help much. Yet I made it here in one piece.

The starter seemed to be getting worse the closer to California I got. Now that I'm here it's completely toast. The thing that confuses me is the way the car shifts. Typically it will shift into second gear around twenty five miles an hour when accelerating normally. Now it won't shift unless I have the pedal on the floor, and it won't shift till forty five miles per hour. Much faster than I want the motor to be turning. I can't get it to shift any sooner though. This all started on the trip over. The car has been in my family since 64 and I've never encountered a problem like this.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be? Transmission fluid looks good and is at the proper level. I've replaced the head and I will be putting a new starter in it as soon as I get one, but I don't know anything about transmissions.

Sounds like the trip just wore it out.

You've checked the fluid. It should be red without any burnt smell.

The only other things to possibly check is the band adjustment (you'll need an inch/lb torque wrench), the manual linkage, and the modulator. make sure that all of these are good and that the modulator vacuum line is not leaking.
