The 170 engine only kicked out 105 gross hp at the flywheel. This is with the engine stripped on a dyno.
After the exhast system, under bonnet heat and altitude correction, there would be less than 75 hp. Normally, a gorss hp reading drops a minimum of 16% and up to 38% less power when rated as SAE Net HP.
Once the axle, tire drag and gearbox losses are factored in, you loose 26% if its manual, and about 33% if its the old Ford-o-matic.
A good 1966 XR 200 kicks out 67 rear wheel hp. A 170 would be hard pressed to trip 57 hp at the bags.
For nasty French Killer watts, multiply by 0.7456.
A note for Australians. A well tuned Holden Sunbird 1900 would drag any 170 Falcon or Mustang off. The little cut down Starefire or Opel four had about 57 hp at the rear wheels, and about 80 hp net at the flywheel.
A Falcon and a Sunbird weigh in at less than 2500 pounds, and were unable to break the 20 second quarter mile
