Hello,

I'm rebuilding my 170 out of my 62 Falcon Squire wagon. I went ahead and pulled the 2 speed fordOmtic. What other automatic tranny options do I have if any? Thanks.'

The early 170 block did not have the later (66-up?) 'dual-drilled' bellhouse pattern but single 'small pattern' for small early automatic and 3spd manual.
..
BUT , Ford used the small BH pattern of the early motor into the late 70's for the ubiquitous C4 3spd automatic. .
.
So, you can use the later C4 with small six unique Flywheel/BH/Cvtr parts from any later 170/200 (much sturdier and 3 gears) . There is a rear tranny mount available from vendors also - " C4 Conversion Mount". ( Linkage, Speedo, Kickdown etc TBD )
.
here's a 1976 Comet 200 'Dual Pattern" motor using unique 'Small Pattern' Bellhouse with C4 tranny etc ...
.
. .
.
C4 'Conversion Mount for 61-65 Falcon/Comet

BTW - 'I never learned to drive an automatic' .

Thank you for the reply. Now I have to locate a C4 with the small BH. The wagon is my “cruiser.”

Thanks again for the info.

Here’s my 1963.5 Sprint

That is great wagon you have. Are you planning any performance upgrades for your 170?

I just had the head rebuilt and the exhaust port divider welded in. Putting dual exhaust on. I had a fun time finding someone to weld cast iron! Need to post some pics.

What other ideas would you recommend? I thought about putting an early 4 main 200 crankshaft in it. Any other ideas?

Also, if someone could please explain or direct me to a link on how to post pictures. I’ve already forgotten how.

Thanks!

As powerband stated lots of ideas and he knows what he is doing as you can see he has already built a high speed wagon. Just depends on how much you want to spend. Some ideas in line with my budget and expectations:

Port and polish, 3 angle valve job for the head.
Slight bump in compression when milling head and/ or decking block.
The early pre-emission timing chain advanced a bit.
Bit more cam with low to midrange powerband.
Exhaust manifold with 2" outlet and with a single 2" exhaust all the way back. Recent discussion on this forum about single advantage over duel.
Direct mount small base Rochester 2v with DS II ignition with custom curved distributor discussed on this forum.
Performance mods are available for the C4.
You may find with an increase in hp you can lower the axle ratio for effortless, quieter and more civilized high speed freeway cruising.

These are lower cost low hanging fruit type upgrades I have planned for my 250 Bronco. As a disclaimer I have not accomplished these items but there are plenty of very knowledgeable members on this forum that have and can advise/elaborate/correct.

Also I like that idea with a 200 crank which I recall reading something about that awhile back but not recalling much detail but someone on here may know about it. I think finding the early 200 4 main crank might take a bit of effort.

With a standard bore it should be 182ci with a 200 crank. Could be more with machining.

Update!

As luck would have it, I located and purchased an early 4-main 200 crankshaft! Now looking for a C4 5 BOLT BELLHOUSING, #C4AP-7976-A, so I can upgrade the tranny. If anyone has a lead on a good 5 bolt BH that would be appreciated.

I had asked the seller if they were sure it was a 4 main bearing crankshaft for which engine, since they had it listed for a 144 or 170 or 200. I had asked them for the crank number cast into one of the counterweights. I said the stroke was different for each engine, so it couldn't fit all of the above. Hope it was a 200 crank.

Bubba had listed in a previous post about which Toyota pistons would work well in a 170 to make it a 182 cubic inch engine with a 200 crank. He was a wealth of information & we miss him terribly. Good luck with your build & keep us updated. This is very exciting to me!!! I think probably to many others on this forum also.

I talked with my machinist today. He said it will work if it’s a true 200 4-main crankshaft. He thought it was a great idea. We shall see. Thanks again for all of the help!
