1963 Falcon with a 250 2V

Hi Folks,

I have a 250 2V (engine number JG34MK87763C - can anyone tell me what this is from) which is pretty much standard. It has a 350 holley and extractors which are in average condition.

It currently is running a 4sp single rail and hydraulic clutch. I want to change this over to an automatic. What is the best gearbox for street use? A C4 or a BorgWarner 3sp? AOD?

I have an MSD 6AL to install, but am runnning a points distributor. What is the best way to convert to an electronic distributor?

What can I expect for HP if I change over to a reasonable street cam and the MSD?

Any advice would be appreciated. Newbie to this forum and am enjoying the older threads!

Refer codes in the X-flow sticky section.

JG is a Geelong made, Geelong assembeled code. The car it came from wass not made in Queensland or CKD'd in New Zealand.

34 is Fairmont sedan or possibly the Futura

MK is the year and month. That's 1972, June.

87763C is the chassis and engine number

 That's Mike, isn't it?

I was talked out of the electronic add-ons by a lot of Torana sixers. general consensus was that the Bosch system recurved was happy up to about 6 grand, and up to 9K with aftermarket gear. Unless you're planning on spending bulk time over 6000RPM, focus on the basic distributor/curve. The MSD will be the icing on the cake in this sense; better than using it to prop up a maladjusted system.

Buy an XE Falcon electronic dizzy, and have the unit reshafted with a donor fat shaft welded to the mech advance top off the thin original drive shaft. The difference is 40 thou overall, and while I have run these as a mismatch, there is no way I'd advocate it! There are some minor mods to make the dizzy housing fit the block, but I stress minor.

Autos - get a C4, and read this site. You'll never buy a shift kit for a C4 again. 8) Talk about spilling the beans... Don't cam up too much unless you want to spend on a stall converter.

Cheers, Adam.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Didn't think to read the xflow sticky re engine numbers.. oops...

Which model XE (what about XF models)? does that matter (efi/carb)? I am not sure where to get the dizzy reshafted, or for that matter, trusted to reshaft it. Wouldn't it screw up your timing if it was reshafted wrong? Recommend someone in Sydney? I'm in Revesby.

Thanks for the link to the C4 page, thats great info.

You want the distributor with a little metal box hanging off the side, and the male terminal posts. XD series have female terminals, closer together (more risk of arcing or deterioration from trapped water) and XF are the externally controlled units with no box on the side.

Any 12V coil will work from the Bosch GT40 through to the HEC-716. Don't waste money on a used coil from the wreckers. They lay 'em down and the cooling oil runs out. Upgrade your positive feed by using the original switched source to control a relay that gives 12V at the coil.

I send my dizzies to a mob down south. I'll PM you the details. It's not cheap but you're getting essentially a brand new part. Make sure you provide them with appropriate info - like shift RPM.
