I have a 1965 mustang with a 200 six that has what sounds like a hydraulic lifter noise. Gets loud than will go away. I removed the valve cover to see how the rockers looked, any freeplay etc... and was suprised to see adjusters on the rockers. I thought 200's had non adjustable rockers. So now I don't know if this has mechanical or hydraulic lifters, or how to check the adjustment. Any advice would be great. This is my first crack at a chat room...so thanks in advance

Welcome buickboy63, You found the right place. It's not unusual to find an adjustable rocker set on a 200. This is for a couple of reasons. First, many people like to use adjustable rockers on a head that has been milled from the original specs to avoid coil bind. Plus, Ford was famous for using anything that they had left over from previous models. They had what they called an "Empty Bin" policy, and would use any leftover part that would fit to use them up.

Do a search on valve adjustment here on the site and you will come up with several good recommendations. I would imagine that you have hydrolic lifters, but you can probably find out by loosening one of the adjusters and seeing if you can pump the pushrod. Solid lifters won't budge of course. LOL Don't do this until you are ready to do a valve adjustment.

I had a 65 200 head on my 68 200 block and it had hydraulic lifters, but who knows. I think I read somewhere, the early models had solid lifters but later they all came with hydraulic lifters. I am probably dreaming about that. But I would imagine the adjustment would be very similar. I will have to go to the fordsix handbook and see what Dennis says about that...... :?:

Thanks to all of you for the great response to my valve adjustment questions. I love this site already!!!
