Ok, was talking to my auto teacher today about the turbo and plans with it, and he noted that the '67 head has non hardened valve seats, and with the turbo, he's worried about having the non hardened seats, as we cannot machine for hardened seats in house. I'v heard about just upgrading to stainless valves and that cures the problem and soft seats can be used, is this true?

also for turbocharging, will I need stiffer valve springs? will be running 8.3:1 comp and 8 PSI boost. the valve springs had 1.02 shims under them, and I don't know there original rating.

I'd say that you might as well upgrade the valvesprings, 302 exhaust springs can be used on both intake and exhaust on the 200 and are a nice upgrade. Also use the 4.0 V6 retainers as they are lighter and stronger than stock.

About hardened seats, I can't tell you if a turbo will be harder on valve seats than running naturally aspirated.

Howdy Matt:

Putting in Stainless steel valves will not solve the soft seat problem in a '67 head. You may be able to get by for many years without hardened seats. It will depend on your driving habits. If you're going to be commuting many miles each day you will likely benefit from hardened seats. If you're only cruizing and weekend driving non-hardened seats will last a long time. A turbo may increase the amount of gleeful driving you do, which will add to seat stress.

Also stiffer-then-stock springs will accelerate valve seat wear, especially at higher rpms. I'd wonder why the springs were shimmed so much. There are typically two reasons to shim springs; 1. to attain stock spec spring heights, open and closed, or 2. to increase spring pressures. Are the valves recessing into the head? Check the tension on the stock spring. If they are not up to stock pressures at open/closed specs replace them. late model 200 springs are spected at 150# open at 1.22" and 52# closed @1.59".

If I were in your shoes and planned to spend time, money and energy to build a nice turbo head, I'd out source to get hardened seats installed.

Adios, David

the valves were not resessed. what would be a good turbo head build? besides hardened seats, prolly gonna have them done just so I don't have to worry about it.

Personally, I would get a 1980 and up E0xx head

yeah, I was thinking about that. I'm gonna call the junkyards and see what I can dig up. I called all over to find a rebuilt 1 from Napa, advance auto, Rock Auto, but none of them have them ( was going to pull apart and re rebuild anyway, just for quality control ). there's a few yards to call. there on speed dial in the autoshop, I'll call around monday.

but is there anything special I should do to the head for turbo? SS valves? 3 angle valve job?
