200/250 Clarity Issues

Keep'em Inline

New member
Hi, have been looking around here and on the Classic Inline site about the 200/250's. I'm having a tough time understanding if the 200 and the 250 are 2 different blocks or if the 250 is a factory stroked 200 with a different head on it to eliminate the log set up. Can someone set me straight?

Also, anyone have a 250 in a '66? How's the performance? I plan on 'building up' a 250 and putting in. Does 250-275 hp sound unreal? Behind a 4 speed manual or auto? How did you set up the motor mounts? (I saw the thread on the '68 with the 250, wasn't sure if the bolt holes on the 66 shock towers were the same)

Much appreciated.

The 250 is a different block. It IS a stroked 200, but there was no room for more stroke with the 200 block. 200s and 250s have the same log head in the US, though in Australia and Argentina they had much better options.

With the CI head and the right cam and induction, I'd say it's easily possible for 200+ hp at the wheels. It's been done already. With the log head, you will be struggling to break 200. Forced induction can make it possible, though.

I thought the 250 had a different head on it that did not include the log set up. How hard is it to get a old of an Aussie 250 head (or block) in the States?

Bear with me, i'll pick this stuff up eventually. If it helps I already have 2 inline Jeeps!

You can put a 250 in a 66. I put one in a 65. I used the 65 motor mounts and just elongated the holes on the part of the mount that bolts to the engine. This let the engine sit just low enough to close the hood. The biggest difference between the 200 and 250, performance wise, is that the 250 has a lot more torque.

You can find the Aussie heads here and there. Classic Inlines has them occasionally, and they're on eBay. There's also one for sale right now in the buy/sell/trade forum. Expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $1000, plus shipping, plus whatever it costs to rebuild one.

Rustang, do you happen to have pictures of your MM's? I spoke with a guy via e-mail from Clifford Performance and he says the 250 is almost 2'' taller than the 200. I'm not looking to put a shaker/scoop hood on or modify the hood. Trying to keep it stock.

The Aussie heads are a direct bolt on to an American block? I'd probably be better off with a standard intake, as they have more aftermarket support? wallaka, much thanks for the insight.
