200 block differences

I have a quick question regarding the differences between the 200 blocks manufactured over the years. I know the differences between '65 and '66 which require different bellhousings, and I know Ford changed some things on the block in 1980, but what about the time period between '66 and '79? What I'm asking is, will a '79 200 bolt up to a '66 trans? Can a '79 200 bolt into a '66 Mustang? The reason for the question is I've found a low milage '79 200 engine (with no trans at all) and was wondering if I might save myself some time, $, and labor swapping this motor instead of doing a total rebuild on the non-running stang's.

Any input is appreciated. :D
Thank you in advance. :D

79 wil fit , i also got a 78 in the car . 66 model and after it are the dual pattern block . al 66 model parts wil fit . only the carb wil not fit . a 66 model got a small log intake , the 79 wil have the big log intake and hardend valve seals .and the bigger valves !

Yeah, I belive the late engines will fit the early bellhousing, but the early engine will not fit the later bellhousing. somebody please correct me if i am wrong. the 80 blocks had a totally different pattern that will not work with either of the other styles.

I for example put a '72 block in front of my '64 tranny

Thanks guys! That helps a lot! Just one more thing though, Does anyone know if there would be any problems with the accesories bolting up on the front of the engine? Reason for asking is the 1965 mustang has power steering on it (and I want to keep that). I plan to swap in a 4 cyl T-5 I already have (from an '89 T-bird turbo coupe) and can pick up a '66 type bellhousing, etc. to make it all work with the '79 block (just want to be sure it WILL all work before I buy).

Again, thanks in advance! :D

Not sure about the power steering? I see no reason it would not work. you might have to mix and match fans & fan spacers to fit the rad, on mine I ended using the fan from the '72 but took off the fanspacer that it had bacause it would not clear the radiator, with the spacer gone the fan would hit the balancer so I spaced it with a few washers.

just use the 66 model oilpan, and instal the complete power steering, i also got powersteering , the 79 types are having a differend type oilpan . [ sorry i did forget to tel in the first post ]

the powersteering wil fit , np.

come,s the block with flywheel ? 65 model got the 8.5 type after 66 they got the 9 type flywheel , 9 type is better .

for a T5 swap you can better pick up a 67 bellhouse . adapterplate is easyer to get , [ thinner then normal ] for the 67 type it is easyer to get an adapterplate. you can get also for the swap an diafragma pressure plate from a 79 4 cyl mustang .

I have a 78 block with a 80 head in a 66 Stang with a C4 so it should work allright in yours too! :D :D :D

You will probably have to use your original water pump and pulleys, brackets, etc., oil pump pickup & oil pan.

Plug off the egr hole in the head and keep the duraspark distributer, and use your 66 exhaust manifold.

Thanks again for all the input guys! One last question just to get things straight. Can a '65 bellhousing bolt up to a dual pattern black (ie. '66 through '79)? I know a '66 and newer bellhousing can't bolt up to a '65 200 block, but is it possible to go the other way?

Thanks again! :D

Yes, that's why its called DUAL pattern. Later block goes anywhere an early does (as long as it is high mount starter block).
