200 ci to 300 in a '65 mustang?

I'm building a car for my grandson and am looking at a 300ci engine with a 4000 mile short block and a 4 speed toploader overdrive Trans out of a '86 F-150 for my 65 mustang coupe. I see references to "close ratio and wide ratio". I would like to use this trans even if I don't do the engine swap and I know the bell housings are different. Which one would I want for street use. I will be adding some performance to the engine, nothing radical, just headers, some head work and more carb and maybe a moderate cam. I have never modified any of my Mustangs and am not familiar with the 300 engine so I need some advice here. Any help please.

not sure on the trans would need to see some pictures but if its a top shifter tower than is probably not going to work in a car. IE shifter would be under the dash. I think you could swap the gears into a car case though they used a 3 speed W overdrive trans in the Granada's

"close ratio and wide ratio" would only apply to the older car 4 speeds (Top Loaders & B&W 10T's) with a 1 to 1 4th gear. In my opine a close ratio would work very well for a performance six. Chances are that as long as you have a bell housing that fits the engine you use you can bolt it up or adapt it. Most people now days go with a 5 speed it's even better. On the performance building if you go with a 300 than you find more info in the big six section, good luck

the engine and transmis are for a truck and should really be traded for what works in a 'stang. It is a super long one needing radiator or fire wall movement (I'd imagine) to place in there. Be very nose heavy...

as suggested go to the 300/4.9 or 'stang forums for the real scoup...
BTW: that motor was a long run going into the efi yrs (stopped production in '96) in dump trucks, desert irrigation pumps, airport tugs, generators etc. I'm on another site (FTE) and folks report over 300K mi on them, but again - trucks. Some on our form here turbo & race them!
