Hi, I'm new to this group. I have a 1965 Mustang with a 200cid and had been wanting to put a V8 in it for a while but my Dad has talked me out of it. My 6 has some problems. I wanted to see what Ya'll thought I should do.
Well first things first. When I start it it has this noise that I can only explain as a clunk in the block I've had it checked by the local Mustang "Expert" his advice was to pull the engine and stick a V8 in it. When I said I wanted to keep it he kinda sneered and said " you can either put money in this to fix it or you can put a V8 in it" and he left and told the mechanic who was workin on it to put it back together. The mechanic said he thinks it's probly a wrist pin in 5 or 6. So I know I'll need a rebuild kit with pistons. Next is when I try to accelerate it falls on it's face no power what so ever the engine rev's like it's tryin to go but it won't thought it might be the carb but I had it rebuild no change. last when I drive it I hear some grinding noise that sounds like it might be the rear end goin out. I have a 1963 Farilane that has a V8 in it so I have the 5 lug rear end if Ya'll think I should change it out or I could try to find a rebuild kit for it. I wanted to add some hi-pro parts to add as much HP as possible with out compromising the car's original look here's what I wanted to do, headers, a dual barrel carb and flowmaster exhaust. Other than that I need some idea's of what I can do. I love this car I've had it since before I could legally drive (drove it some time's illegally) :D Lookin forward to some advice!

is this a manual or automatic? i would get the tranny checked out first if youre getting grinding and its revving but youre not getting the power to the wheels

but screw the V8 guys, keep the 6

It's a automatic. I'll have the transmission checked. My brother is a mechanic and he seems to think it's the transmission and rear end.

I think if you really browse the site you will see that keeping the 6 is the best. Now of course we are bios. But putting in a v8 is what everyone else does. Be different and you will be amazed with what you can do with the 6. It will cost you abut twice as much to really hop-up the 6 but you don't have to hack -up your car and change the suspension, rear end, drive linkage, transmission, wiring, and so-on. A lot a guys do change some of that out, but you don't have to. Keep the original alive and hop-up the engine. You can beat a v8 off the line w/ a hopped-up 6 and still keep it a daily driver, not to mention the gas mileage

Yeah, I know it is best to keep the 6. I have changed my mind about putting in an 8. The only thing about souping up my 6 is I don't want to turbo charge it I want honest muscle! I have to have mine rebuilt so Any recommendations on a good rebuild kit will be appreciated!

Check out the most recent posts on the 2V change out. It is well within the range of doable and will pep up your beast. Also, get a copy of the Falcon Performace Handbook through the link at the bottom of the screen: Ford Six Shop. It will make a believer of you.

With gasoline at $3 a gallon and more than likely to go up again you will be thankful later for having the peppy but more economical I6 in there.

F/R suspension is done. I want to rebuild it where can I find a good kit with pistions

check out www.classicinlines.com it is run by the admin of this forum Azcoupe(Mike) there are many different performance parts there and they have everything you need to rebuild a really strong and quick motor

and you dont need a turbo to get a quick I6 there are a few members in the 15's NA and one in the 14's with a little gogo juice but the 2 fastest I6's on the site are turbocharged with one being in the 10's and the other previously being in the 9's with an old setup that he is redoing with new more updated stuff

Nathan,

Rebuild the 200, the mechanic that told you to put a V-8 in it is a damn idiot. Next time you see him tell him I said so and give the bastard <that is NOT what I called him ;)>my friggin number!

I just restored a 66 mustang for my sister, I restored the 200 and it's a screwming monster compared to a stock 200.

You can mod your intake for a 2 bbl carb after teh rebuild, or you can go for an aftermarked head that somebody is rumoured to be making... But I think that's a little extreme, unless you must make every ounce of power you can grab.

If you like the car and I think you do, then continue to respect it's heritage as a 6 cylinder car and it will be good to you.

First is the engine rebuild.
Then get a wrecking yard rear end for $75 bucks and pop it in.
At the same time buy a $120 dollar rebuild kit for the C-4 (pioneer sells them) adn pop it in yourself. It's easy to do even if you've never done it before.

PM me if you have any specific questions.

Here's the 66 I did for my awesome big sister---> http://fordsix.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=43518

Later and have a good weekend! Happy Independance Day!

Like everybody else has been saying, go to classic inlines man, they should have everything you need in terms of a performance rebuild kit (or at least they used too *shrug*.

All i know is the little six in my falcon is ridiculous. When i got it the darn thing ran on 5 cylinders, smoked like an oil field, had tar for oil, had the carb from a 144 (its a 200) on it without any check balls in it, definetly out of tune, and the darn thing started up every time since i first started her. Once i rebuilt the carb it actually idled too :), if it hadnt of smoked i would have ran it for a bit before rebuild (after changing the oil). Even on 5 cyls that thing did a burnout when the PO revved it up and dropped the clutch, and also made plenty of pep to drive along with everybody else.

That six will last you forever if you take care of it, the automotive teacher at my JC (well one of em) has a falcon with a 170 in it that has over 400,000 miles on it and he still drives it :D.

When the car falls flat on it's face and is revving trying to go faster, does the tach needle "pulse" and does the car make a rapid backfiring sound?

Howdy and welcome to the forum! You certainly came to the right place 8)

The most important thing you can do is to educate yourself about your car and mechanical things in general. Spend some time reading back posts, read the FAQ's, do some searches, ask more questions. If you aren't willing to do that then you'd better have lots of money

Rebuild "kits" are usually too generic for my purposes. Maybe for a bone stocker but you already stated a desire to upgrade. Do your research, be patient, and enjoy the journey of learning.
