Regardless of money, ok you said it.
First thing first, the old head has to go. You can put headers on it, bigger carbs, etc... but the breathing bottlekneck is the head. So until you do something about the head itself, upgrades like headers will just make the car sound cool.
Get yourself an aussie head. They have detachable manifolds and breath much better then the U.S. Log heads. I would then stuff in some new larger valves, have a 3angle valve job performed. Throw on a 2bl carb anywhere from 350 to 500 cfm should be plenty. Once that's done you can throw on some headers and not only sound cool but with the head flowing so much more the headers will help to open things up. The biggest gains you will get come from the head. Don't forget a cam upgrade. Everything else you do to the engine will result in minimal gains. The head is where your horsepower can be made or lost in some cases.
The next big thing would be a gear change now that you have added power get rid of the highway gears and go with something around 3.5:1. That will really make the car launch off the line.
Anyway, I just told you everything I plan to do to mine. Got the head, cam just need the carb some gaskets and time to finish all the other projects I already have going.
Hope that helps and good luck to you.
