200ci performance ? or lack of...

Well the first place I took it too said that my six was one of the strongest running sixes that they had seen for its age and never being rebuilt...like I said..hose's and everything were checked..the car was tuned..however, I found it odd that no one mentioned anything about adjusting the timing or replacing Jets for this altitude...Im not very mechanically inclined, and that was the first thing I thought of.

I suppose ill just take it a piece at a time. I do believe I have a cracked exhaust manifold as well..the first place mentioned that. Would that effect engine power?

You all are a huge help...thanks for putting up with silly questions, and general lack of knowledge on the subject.

yes a cracked exhaust manifold could deminish power

and just think of it this way those silly questions u clame ur asking arent silly every1 has asked them actually they are very smart questions for som1 who hasnt worked on a ford i6 before even i asked them (which isnt saying much though)

Ok I have gleaned a bit more information as per some of your instructions..

The cars build code lists the axel/gear at a 3.00:1..and the vehicle was destined for Washington DC back in march of 65...

So I would guess that it is set up for sea level driving..still considering it went from DC..to Maryland...to Texas...

I guess thats a good place to start..getting the carb rebuilt..and jetted for this alt...then adjust timing and a possible Ignitor system for the distributer...and finnaly a new rearend 3.25:1?

Hey another question for those of you that are old mustang buffs that has nothing to do with IL6's. On my build sheet (whats left of it) it lists the interior trim as 65...the body code is a 65B which I believe is the luxury interior coupe. The problem im having is that everyother decode site I go too..including a mustang restoration guide lists the 65 trim code as something different..Some say all red crinkle viynl...orthers say Red and White deluxe interior. And the book doesnt even list the 65 interior code as an option in '65..only in '66. The interior of the car right now is red..all red pony interior..but it was redone some years ago...so I have no clue as to if they changed it or not. Just curious if anyone knows the true designation for that code for that year.

Thaks again.

Howdy bck:

Sorry, I can't help you with your interior dilemma but let me suggest a few refinements to your engine improvement plan.

1. Make sure your ignition system is up to par. Then add an additional 4 degrees of initial advance. Stock specs call for 12 degrees of initial advance for a 200 with an Auto trans. Increase the setting to 16 degrees of initial. You might want to run a can of Techron through the fuel system to clean things up on the inside. Listen for ping or knock. If you hear none, try another two degrees of advance. The additional advance should noticeably increase your power and economy.

2. Buy a rebuild kit for your carb. Open the box and read the instructions over, several times. Then assess if this isn't something you can do. It is not difficult with an Autolite 1100, but it does require care and thoroughness. While it is apart note the jet size stamped into the jet. Finding replacement jets for an Autolite is difficult as they are no longer in production and parts are somewhat scarce. Post what you have and what you need here. Many of us have been accumulating parts for years and may have what you need.

3. Be on the lookout for a good exhaust manifold to replace your cracked one. This is not critical to performance as much as it is to your safety and engine longivity. If the crack is severe enough if could cause a warped valve(s). Also check the entire exhaust system for obstructions that might impede flow. If repair or replacement is necessary, specify a 2" system for pipes and muffler. If the muffler needs replacing, upgrade to a turbo type.

Assuming your engine is in otherwise good shape, these three issues should have you motoring up-to-speed.

Adios, David

First of all welcome aboard. I live in Longmont, CO and own a 1966, 200, C4, one barrel 1100 model carb, with 75,000 original miles. I purchased the car from original owner who was tranferred to Boulder from Lexington, Kentucky back in 1974. The problem I had when first purchased five years ago was driveability, would not idle and would stall or hesitate when leaving the stop light. I had purchased a Ford service manual and determined the jetting or should I say jet was for sea level. So I rebuilt the carb and installed a high altitude jet. Well I still had my driveability problems and now it would not go when you stepped on it. It would just bog down. I went back to the original jet and that solved that problem. After a good tune-up and an ignition upgrade (Pertronix 1, their wires and 40,000 volt coil the car is running pretty good. I also implimented some tips from the "Falcon Six Performance Manual" a must have reference book. Good luck, Lowell
