Which '51 Mercury transmission? 1951 was a change over year for Mercury transmissions. I am assuming you are talking about a manual transmission, not the automatic. Early 51 merc trans had the large round bell housing mating area with the clutch arm swiveling in the transmission, like the earlier flathead Fords. Late 51 merc trans had the four bolt holes that bolted to a normal bell housing, where the bell housing had the clutch arm pivot. If you have the late trans you should be able to bolt it up to your 215. If you have the early trans I don't think so. I would not try a longer yoke, I would get the drive shaft made correctly. Check the rear motor mount location too, it may not be in the same place as the transmission you are replacing.
