221 into XL Falcon (144 original)

Gday everyone,

I'm new here and new to Early Falcons. I've just picked up a 63 Wagon as a daily driver. The 144 is a bit of a smoker and a mate has given me a 221 out of a later Falcon. I've heard that the bolt pattern is different on the back of the 221, is there an adapter I can use to fit the motor up to the original box using the original tailshaft. I don't want to go fast, but I'd like it to go up the hills reasonably - as I live in Katoomba...

thanks in advance

OK 221 fits well as later xy on engines have a bigger water pump that makes fitting a fan a bit of a problem.
As to tranny the only way would be to find an adapter plater from an XP auto 3 speed BW type, they have one between the tranny and early block.
OR and this is a better way to go, get the whole 3 speed synchromesh 3 speed that came with 221 and drop that in, the clutch will be hydraulic, and tailshaft is different.
OR get a toyo 5 speed conversion, your axle ratio will be way too low for the bigger engine a overdrive will help.
I doubt that the original tranny will take the 221 torque for very long.

hey,
i would personally hook up a BW35 auto up to the 221 useing the xp BW35 gearbox mount and the best thing is with the 221 u dont need to have the car engineered coz its right on the 20% power upgrade in australia
cheers matt
