Hello guys!
I am needing a oil pump for my 1956 ford customline with the 223...

Searching online I found two codes for oil pumps: C1AZ-6600-A and C0AZ-6600-A...
What's the difference between them and whats the correct one for my car?

Thank you in advance.

To the best of my knowledge both those oil pump numbers would be interchangeable. There are two oil pumps that were made for the 223 one for 1954 to 1963 engines there would be several Ford part numbers for these years. For a 1956 Ford 223 its a B9AE-6621- or B9AE-6621-C but all of the oil pumps up to 1963 are basically the same oil pump and a Melling M-43 is what you can use.

There is one other oil pump that's very different it was made for the 1964 223 engines this would have had a number like C4-6621-A. You will need to know your blocks casting number to figure out its true year and get the right pump unless you know for certain its the original 1956 engine in your car. Good luck

Thank you for your response.

I am pretty sure this engine is the original 1956 engine.
Can you please tell me, why these oil pumps are indicated for the same years, but looks differents? A friend of mine, who has a 58 custom with the 6 cyl, has a oil pump that looks like the first one of the photos attached... My mechanic is going to take out mine, to compare with this pictures... But in the meanwhile, can you tell me why are this oil pumps different, and if they are interchangeable?

Thank you in advance.

The first picture is a Melling M-43 this is an aftermarket oil pump it is made of cast iron and is the right Oil Pump for 1955 to 1960 Ford car and truck 223 sixes but its add is incorrectly labeled as to all the years it fits. The second oil pump looks different because its an OEM Ford oil Pump and is made of Aluminum. I can't tell what the box'es part number is in the picture, but If the pump has a C1AE part number stamped on it that would make it the wrong oil pump, but the add label also can't be right then, according to Melling it wouldn't be right for both a 1955 to 1960 223 engines as well as the 1961 to 1963 engines. Your friends 1958 Ford 223 though would use the exact same oil pump as yours.

Turns out I was wrong and there are Four different oil pumps made by Melling that cover all the different sizes of the Ford OHV Six engines 215, 223, & 262. On the Vin code you can find the engine code if its the original engine this would be the first letter a 223 six is an A code, see below picture of a 1956 Ford Vin / Warrentee Door Tag.

The first Oil Pump is the Melling M-25 fits the 1952 and 1953 215 Ford Six (First OHV six in this engine family) and the 1954 223 first year for the bigger 223 six also uses it this oil pump covers all the Ford car models and all 1951 to 1954 Ford truck models from F1, F2, F3, F4, & F100, F250, F350 & P350, for a 215 or 223 OHV six both these have an A for the engine code.

The second Oil Pump is the Melling M-43 this pump Fits all Ford 223 car and truck engines from 1955 to 1959, as well as the 1960 223 Ford Trucks with a J engine code and the 1959 Edsel 223 with an A engine code, it also fits the 1960 Ford's and Edsel's 223 with a V engine code.

The third Oi Pump is the Melling M-67 this pump fits all the Ford and Mercury 223 six car engines with a V engine code from 1961 to 1963. Also fits all 1961 to 1963 F100, F250, F350 Ford 223 six Trucks with a J engine code & 262 six Truck engines with a B code engine F250, F350, and also the bigger F500, F600, etc. trucks too.

The fourth Oil Pump is the Melling M-67A this pump only fits in the 1964 Ford 223 six cars with a V engine code & all the 1964 Ford F100, F250, F350, and bigger Trucks with a 223 six with a J engine code or the 262 six with a B engine code. Best of luck

My vin code has the "A" code, and the valve cover as the oil breath filler looks like a 55-56 engine, and so is the water pump (I think the water pump in the 1958 looks different of the 56, but am not sure). I know those things could be changed over this 65 years, but I really think it's a 56 engine.

You solved all my doubts about oil pumps. Thank you very much!

I also have a question about rod bearings, and maybe you can answer it...

In a local store, they have measured my connecting rod bearings, and the size is .010. But my connecting rod bearing have this inscription "DAB 50 6830 CAP 65-12E 6-13 AD-49" as shows the picture attached to this post. Do you know if this inscription means anything related to the size...? Someone over facebook told me that is something related to the date, but I want to be really sure, because I am buying this things online, and they will be shipped to my country, so no refunds....

Thank you in advance.

Yes those on that side of the bearing are the manufacturing numbers and date codes. The bearing size is located on the other end (on the opposite side) of the bearing shell. If you have those or a picture of them I can ID the bearing size exactly. Good luck

Hello,

Thank you for your response.

I can't find any numbers on the other end of the bearing size...

Sorry to bother you, but I have the last question about oil pumps: My oil pump looks like a m-43, but it seems to be slightly different. What do you think?

Thank you very much!!

Hi Ignacio223UY, it's not a bother I am glad to try and be of some help you. Some bearing manufactures had their own numbering system to tell the bearing sizes but with some Genuine Ford bearings they would not be marked for the Standard size these had an oval shape with a FoMoCo stamped into it these were Standard, they also had a .0001 or .0002 bearings that were sometimes used to get the oil clearance correct. Those DAB bearings were also an OEM Ford part, without a clear size marking on the bearings than the best way is to measure the Rod or Main bearing journals on your crankshaft and then you will know what the true size is.

Looks to me that your oil pump is still the original Ford part because the main body looks to be made out of aluminum under that old oil varnish. Yes its going to look a little different from that Melling M-43, being the M-43 is a thicker cast iron body and because those original aluminum body's are a good bit thinner. Melling was also was an OEM parts manufacturer for Ford making the parts to their specs. Also you can see the little metal ID tag with the a 43 stamped on the one cover plate bolts? If you could see a picture of the bottom side of that new Melling M-43 Oil Pumps cover plate I think you would also see an ID tag with a 43 stamped on it too, you might ask the seller to send you a picture shot of cover plate as further verification. Best of luck
