223 transmission choices

Hi all,

I am attempting to put a 223 inliner in a 63 Mercury Meteor two door hardtop. The car is set up for an automatic and hanging a clutch pedal and all that jazz is something I am not capable of at the moment, nor will a stick be something I can drive on a regular basis(injuries, got to love them). I have a 59 Ford car with a blown up 292 and an automatic. Will the automatic that is behind the 292 bolt up to the 223.

The 292 is in storage about two hours from me or I would simply measure the bolt pattern.

The reason I am going with a 223 is I need a front sump oil pan engine to clear the steering components in the car and because I happen to have one sitting in my garage sort of in the way.

If the trans behind that 292 wont work, any suggestions as to what would?

Thanks in advance,
Nate

The trans will work but you have to use a 223 auto bell housing, flex plate etc. There is a also a couple differant kits to bolt on a C4 or any other Ford V8 trans like an AOD etc.

In addition to needing the 11 inch converter and bellhousing for the 223, you will also need the passing gear/throttle linkage that is specifically for the 223/Ford-O-matic setup. You cannot run a Ford-O-matic without this linkage. It mounts on the back of the intake manifold. Your engine probably has the manual transmission throttle linkage on it now. It will need to be removed and replaced with the Ford-O linkage. That linkage, once it has been installed must be adjusted in accordance with the Ford-O-matic shop manual. If it is not, you can easily destroy the transmission.

Thanks for the advice guys. Finances being what they are, I may have to postpone this project for a while. I was hoping to put this together with little to no dollar investment.
