I have a '57 Custom 300 with the stock 223 and auto trans. I found a 223 locally that was in a '59 Ford truck. Are there any differences between the truck and car 223 that would cause any swap issues?
one of the things i have found is the water punp on the car it is off set also a hole in the lower left corner In my 262 ther was a bolt pluging this hole The truck has frount mounts car side mounts The truck may be drill & tap for side mounts The clutch flywheel & bellhousing will need changed
I dont know if the 57 trucks used the old style 53-56 straight type water pump, but the cars had an offset water pump with a rear baffle plate. If the swap engine does have the straight water pump, you will need to use your old water pump off your car engine and make sure that you remove the little pipe plug in the engine for the water bypass mating with the backplate of your car water pump.
The old 215 engines had their mounts more toward the front when compared to the 223's. I dont know how the truck engine is mounted, but i doubt they had a different engine block casting for the car and the truck. You can probably just keep your original car motor mounts and bolt the swap engine right up.
The trucks had a different FordOMatic bellhousing than the cars did on the older models because the bellhousing had dogs on the sides for mounting to the truck frame whereas the cars had a rear extension housing mount, but I'm not sure if the 57/58 trucks were set up that way also. Regardless, you could just re-use your original car transmission with the swap engine.
I have the similar problem, only in reverse. I intend to swap a 223 from a '59 passenger car into my '62 pickup. I have the truck 3-speed and bellhousing.
Can I use the passenger car clutch and flywheel with the truck bellhousing? Which water pump do I need?
