226 idle problem

Hello, I recently picked up a 1947 Ford flathead 6 (226ci) coupe. It had been sitting for about 10 years so I needed to do some work on the brakes etc to get it running. The problem is that the motor wont run on idle. I rebuild the carb and put an inline filter between the pump and carb. Still no idle. I checked the compression and all six cylinders were within specs. It runs strong and without stumble once you get it up in rpm. Is there an idle circuit I missed to clean? The carb is a single port Ford labeled (quessing original) carb. Using the choke there is a sweetspot where it runs on idle. Without choke you need to block off the carb with one hand to about 80% to keep it running. There is also black smoke from the exh but thats probably from me pulling the choke to much to keep it running until I get around from the cockpit to the eng bay. Any thoughts on whats wrong?

You might still have a plugged port in the carb. But You probably have a vacuum leak. Below the carb or intake gasket.
