250 camshaft installation issue - spacer ring needed?

Greetings Ford Six Fans,

My 250 short block is almost completely assembled at the machinist! Only the camshaft installation remains, but there's an issue with that.

As the camshaft bolt is tightened, the center rear surface of the camshaft gear (see photo) is pulled up hard against the thrust plate. If the camshaft bolt was torqued to spec, the camshaft would not be able to turn because of the contact between that surface of the camshaft gear and the thrust plate.

Is there an additional piece that goes between the nose of the camshaft, inside the thrust plate, and the camshaft gear? I didn't notice one when I disassembled the engine, but maybe it looked like part of the camshaft itself. My machinist seems to think that there should be a spacer or ring between the camshaft nose and the camshaft gear. Please advise.

Yes the machinist is right there is a spacer ring that needs to be installed first some call it a wedding ring. This spacer can only fit correctly one way it has a large radius that needs to go towards the cams thrust surface, it's probably still on your old camshaft.

Bubba is right. I ran into the same problem on my 200. The spacer was on the old cam held in place by the little dowel pin.

Mike sells the dowel pin, but I'm not sure about the spacer.
