250ci with T5 Trans...Flywheel dilemma

Hey all...

So I finally got my 250ci with T5 Swap done and installed...Started it up and the engine is vibrating...So I rechecked my invoice and found that the flywheel that I was given and "Assured" it was a 0 balance flywheel is actually a 50oz standard 302 flywheel...

Looking around I cannot find a new flywheel for less than $260.00 (Steel) and they say that the 0 balance is larger and would require replacing the clutch as well...

Now, (trying to remain calm...) I can take the incorrect flywheel and clutch back and get a refund...But $500.00 or more for the correct flywheel and clutch is waaaaaaay out of my price range...

So what can I do that is cheap(er)?...I remember that someone said in their 250 swap article that a 300ci flywheel would work?...Cannot seem to find one that is 157 tooth...

I heard that you guys might have some alternatives and would love to hear them...

I am so close yet so far from having this thing on the road I can taste it...

How about this, find a 300 flywheel and see if you can machine
The OD down to take the 157 tooth ring gear??

Before doing so make sure everything else is the same.

Can you have the weights removed from the flywheel you have now?
I found my 250 fw on ebay, luck i guess, about $80 plus shipping. Also try car-part.com.

The late model flywheel do not have weights like the old ones...the weight is cast into the body of the flywheel during manufacture...I do have the option of getting the stock 50oz flywheel re-balanced by milling off the additional metal...but I have heard some horror stories about balancing gone wrong...But that would be much easier than modifying a larger 164 tooth flywheel to fit a new ring gear.

Getting the old flywheel re-balanced would only be $100.00... plus another $40 for resurfacing.
If I don't hear any better options I may just do that on Monday.

I was hoping to hear some one say ..."Just go to O'Reilley's and get a flywheel for a 19xx Model XX..." and find a solution from another model Ford...

Take the flywheel to a machine shop, see if they can balance it to 0 imbalance. Talk to the manager/owner of the place you bought the flywheel from and see if they will work with you to take up some of the cost from their screw up.

After you return the late 5.0 flywheel you can ask for a flywheel to fit a 1975 to 1980 Granada or Monarch that had a 250 cu. in. six and a stick shift trans. Also the Maverick or Comet 1971 to 77 Mustang 1969 to 73, these are a few that came with 250. Good luck

Depending on where you live a guy in Las Cruces NM removed the 250 from his Bronco and is asking 300 for it although I can,t remember if it includes flywheel. He posted it on classicbroncos.com and I put info here on parts for sale section a few days ago. He does not want to part it out.

I believe 300 & 250 have same FW...
(T count/0 balance)
Not sure bout the 4.9 (ie later motor)

Any shop should be able to 0 oz balance a flywheel. even if it has a 50 oz imbalance.

talk to your shop, it shouldn't be an arm+leg to get it fixed quickly.

From what I've seen, yes, the 164 tooth 300 FW pattern fits the 250 but there is no available OEM Bellhouse for the 164T Flywheel / 250, maybe scattershield would fit ?

Well guys after looking at all the options I have decided to have the stock 50oz flywheel re-balanced to 0. The steel and aluminum racing flywheels take a larger clutch that would cost more. The 300ci engines do indeed have a 164 tooth flywheel that will not fit in the standard mustang bell. For some reason no one carries the 157 tooth 250 flywheel. It seems to be a race only application.

Thanks for all the replies and help!

Now to write a post about that pesky clutch! :D

My understanding is a 250, 289, 300, 302 & 351 bell all fit.

Yes they all fit the 250ci block but not the 164tooth flywheel (The larger diameter means it will not fit inside a standard Mustang GT bell housing)....all of them had a 157 tooth flywheel. And there is not an application specific 157 tooth flywheel with a zero balance available. This means that to get a 157tooth 0 balance flywheel you need to order a "Racing" style flywheel that takes a 10.5" or 11" clutch instead of the stock 10"

which block plate, T5?

The 1971-1985 Australian 200/250/3.3/4.1 flywheel fits as all those engines have the V8 style 3" spacing crank flange just like the US 250.

Its got 160 teeth, but zero balance. The starter pitch is the same at 160 as it is at 157. Just like the early 62 to 65 five bolt Windsor 221/260/289's, the Aussie stuff came out with 160 teeth at the same time and never changed. The same starter was used on the 160 tooth flywheel as the 157.

There are plenty around down here.

Meantime, lookes like you solved your prblem, well done my friend!
