I'm rebuilding a 1962 262 to put in my 1954 F100. I just dropped it off at the machine shop today. The block is already bored .040 over. I think it may need to be bored .060 over. Where is the best place to buy pistons? The only place I have found them for sale is Kanter. $78.75 each is seems high! By the time a get them to me, it will cost over $500 for a set! I read somewhere on here about someone using Y-block pistons in one of these motors. I would also like more info on the camshaft specs on these motors. Stock vs custom grind. My engine is going to be mostly stock except electronic ignition. I little more power would be nice, but I don't want to lose fuel efficiency and reliability. I'm not wanting to make a hotrod, just a nice driver. Thanks

I have a '64 262, haven't done anything to it yet, but I'm gonna be rebuilding it, as well.Got a 300 dizzy, gonna convert to electronic ignition, haven't been able to find a distributor gear for it, so far. Part # C1TF-12390-A. Have you had any luck with that? Also unable to find a source for the Cam/Crank gears, although I suppose I may be able to use the originals, as there is no chain to streatch. Will have to see once I get into it. Are you gonna re-use the originals? On putting the dizzy gear on the 300 distributor, I have the original, I'd just like an extra so when I go to drill/ream it to fit, I'll have an extra, in case I fudge it up the first time!Seem to recall in a post from someone who did it, they said the first time they try to drill it to the "new" size, they buggered it up, said on the second try they drill close, then reamed it to fit.I know some would say its a sin, but I have read that some people re-use the pistons. Any thoughts on that?

I have 292 pistons in my engine but I have 6.200 eagle chev rods& cut the tops of the pistons off about .030 The first engine I used 223 rods & 292 cut pistons. 223 rods are 6.230 long. use oil pump for a 64 they have 5/16 drive. If you have a 262 dizze gear check it against the 300 gear the look the same to me? If you can go too big then put a bushing it. Pull my post

The 300 has 16 teeth.I'll have to check the 262, but I would think it would have 12, like the 223.Jim

What is the stock piston compression height on the 262? It looks like I could use .030 292 flat top pistons in the .060 262 block. The piston pin diameters are the same. If the compression height is the same, they should work fine with my stock connecting rod setup. I have not found a source for timing gears or the distributor gear. I plan on reusing my existing. They show very little wear. I compared distributor gears.
The 262 & 300 distributor gears are completely different. The teeth are running opposite directs of each other, and I think they are different teeth count.

How much mileage did your engine have? Re-assuring to hear the timing gears had very little wear. Have an old post that said Kantner carried them, but I don't have their catalogue, so don't know if they still do.
Figured the 300 gear would be different from the 262. It is timing gears instead of chain, so the cam runs in the opposite direction of the crank, but its on the other side of the engine, which reverses everything. I still haven't had a chance to look at my 262, yet. (Too busy with more urgent parts of my project). I suspect the 262 dissy gear looks just like the 223, (12 teeth )only the teeth go in the opposite direction. On my 'round toit' list is to pull the oilpan on my 262, to see if the Crank is forged (I HOPE!!) and to pull the dissy and compare the gears. Jim

in my pistion catalog 223 cd is 1.865 the 262 is 1.875. the 223 rods are 6.260 long i donot know 262 rod length (app.6.100). 292 cd 1.765 on a 262 rod piston would down app. .130 with 223 rods 262 crank they (292pistons) have cut .030 to.040. 10.00in block -1/2 crank 2.015 -223rod 6.260 -292cd 1.765 =-.040 out of the block. talk to the shop doing your work! 300 rods will work app.6.200 long. -

Thanks for all the good info!! I found a new set of 262 .060 overs thru a local auto parts store. I think their getting them from egge, but the egge
web site does not list the 262. They told me 262 pistons have been discontinued for 2 or 3 years know. I was lucky they still had some on the shelf. I have no idea how miles is on the engine. A friend of mine pulled it from well abused & overworked F500 before it got scraped. I'm debating wether to get the cam reground or not. The cam looks like it's in pretty good shape. I need to mic the lobes and see how much wear there actually is. How much lift did these cams have? Is there any problem getting the reverse rotating cams ground? Who does everyone get to grind these? Thanks again!!
