I just bought a 63 f100 with a 262 and I am trying to figure out whether or not to put performance parts on the 262 or go for a 351 or 390. Any suggestions! THANKS!

What do you ultimately want, out of the vehicle?

I like older stuff, so here's a highly opinionated list:

  1. Modify Duraspark distributor to fit, use with GM HEI module and Ford TFI coil.
  2. Reground cam, dual pattern with about 270-275° on the exhaust side.
  3. Split two original intake manifolds for twin downdraught carb operation.
  4. Fit a 2½" mandrel bent exhaust system with nice long glasspack, then dump it out just before the rear wheel.

How's that for suggestions?

Regards, Adam.

I have a 223 in my 62' uni and it's bone stock and thats the way I want that truck. If you go with one of the v8's you'll have to either fab your own or buy a side engine mount kit.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I do know that I will want to take this engine past stock. What exactly are you talking about when you say take two original intake manifolds and alter them. Could you explain in more detail on how to alter them. Would that be better then say a clifford or offy?

Apparently in '64, the 223/262 went to a different oil pump with a 5/16" dizzy shaft (from the older 1/4" shaft) & with these you might be able to use the DS2 with fewer modifications. I also belive that Clifford has a few cams for this motor. For the most part, whatever will work for the 223 will also work for the 262. You could probably set your engine up more like some of the 300s that a few of these guys are running, if you're interested in more modern carbs, etc. I think its would be neet to have an early factory 4x4 ('59-64) with a 262 & 4spd, DS2, 2100 carb.... I think the wife would kill me if I trundled home with another vehicle though!
