Is there anything wrong about keeping a standard three speed or would it be better to swap it out with some thing else.

There's nothing wrong with keeping a 3 speed it really depends on what engine you are going to have in front of it. The 2 web pages listed above are a good place to start.

I have a 62 with the old 2.77 non-syncro and a stock 170 in front. I am switching to a 3.03 3 speed with a 200 in front. My reasoning is that I plan on building up a 200(will need a stronger trans), I like the 3 speed column swift (its unique), and the wife is going to make the non-syncro a syncro trans come h-ll or high water, by tring to grind off all the gear teeth.("I can down shift to 1st in my Toyota", to old to re-train).

I found a 200 with a 3 speed column shifter behind it last weekend in a 69 Falcon. I bought the engine, trans, column, trans yoke, trans mount and all the misc. stuff I thought I could use or would need. The best part about it is they wouldn't let me take it out of the 69, they said they had to do it and I could pick it up this weekend. So I gave them a list of everything I wanted and told them I would see'm next weekend.

I bought the column to use with the R&P(97 Skylark), I thought it would be better to hack up that column and save the original " spear of death" in case I can't get the R&P to work with the column shifter.

The biggest problem with working on the 2.77 three speed is that the parts are relatively scarce and vary pricey. Since it does not have the synchronized 1st gear, there are often a bunch of chewed up teeth, which gets into buying a new mainshaft. It is often more cost effective to replace the transmission with another model that has a synchronized 1st gear. And if you can get an overdrive too, then the car is much more enjoyable to drive.

Thanks for the info and web links, but I was wondering can I put in a standard five speed. Feed back positive or negative.

Hey Robot...
If you are putting a 3.03 in a '62 you will be very happy when it's done. It is a great tranny and you can forget about worrying about it breaking with a 200 in front.

I put a '71 Maverick engine and tranny (170/3.03 in a '61 Comet. I spent way too much time getting the original 3 OTT adapted to the 3.03 but it did work well. I used the original column and shift setup from the Comet with the shift rods from the Maverick adapted to the car.

TO use the 3.03, I needed :
> Later engine block (66 and later usually are "Dual Drilled"" ). to accept
flat flywheel larger bell.
> Later 67 and up bellhousing, flywheel, clutch TO etc.
> C4 conversion tranny Xmember "modified" for 3.03 tranny
> shift arms from 3.03 3OTT setup - ( Maverick ) cut and adapted to '61
column arms
> fabricated 2nd / 3rd tranny shifter arm to clear tranny
> tranny rear output yoke to fit small 6cyl universal - or adapt driveshaft
to fit 3.03 / C4 yoke
> 'Massage" firewall significantly with BFH to fit the larger bell housing.
> adapt 2.77 clutch Z-bar to fit 3.03 bell clutch. (re-drill in 3.03
location

It's great downshifting while moving and the 3.03 is smooth and virtually unbreakable behind a 144/170/200.

Yes you can swap to a 5-speed. I think anyone who has swapped to the 5 speed will tell you it is about the best money you can spend on improving drivabillity / enjoyment of the car. Look under the Drivetrain topics and you will see ton of threads regarding the swap.

Thanks, but can I keep the rear end or Is it a good idea to swapt it out with an 8" or 9" rear axle. What about the front as well. Any suggestions.

Leave what ever rear is in there. you'll have enough on your plate doing a trans swap where you won't want to have a bunch more to chew on.
