I live in England and have a chance to buy a 4.0 intech in line six ,with an auto ,ecu harness removed from original vehicle but do not know what the vehicle it came from . Would like to transplant it in to a 1965 Ford ranchero ( US model) any information would be great

The 4.0 Intech inline six was found in the 1998-2002 AU Falcon and other Ford Australia models. The "Intech" designation was only assigned to the 1998-2002 model years; the 4.0L SOHC engine found in the EB to EL models were not. To determine if it is a 4.0 Intech is the valve cover will be embossed with "4.0 Intech" and the engine will have a cast aluminum oil sump.

The 4.0 Intech is a transitional engine. It uses the same crank bearings and connecting rods as the next generation Barra 4.0 engine, and the oil sump has cross bolts into the main caps. The rear sump from the early Barra engine can be used on the Intech.

To install the 4.0 engine into your 1965 Ford Ranchero you will need to purchase a J3 chip to go into the ECU to disable any engine immobilisers. TI Performance in Australia sell the J3 chip, https://www.tiperformance.com.au . The 4.0 Intech engine has similar dimensions around the motor mount area to the Barra 4.0, so you maybe able to use the Tuff Mount Kit for the 1964-70 Mustang, https://tuffmounts.com.au/product/e...s-for-barra-conversion-in-64-69-ford-mustang/

I've attached pictures of the 4.0 Intech I have so you can see if the one you are looking at is similar.

Thanks Rockford for your reply, Yes that looks the same engine .can I use the engine harness from the vehicle?
You should get the engine harness and ECU. The Intech harness should be wired as a stand-alone to the Ranchero. Having the 4spd automatic with the engine is a plus since the ECU needs a VSS (variable speed sensor) that attaches between the transmission and speedometer cable. Make sure you get the yoke for the transmission attached to the driveshaft. It would be a good idea to get the driveshaft so you can get the end of the shaft that the yoke attaches to.

I recommend getting a manual for the Australia AU Falcon that includes wiring diagrams so you can trace the wires in the harness to determine which wires are needed and which ones can be discarded.

One question I can't answer is whether the transmission will fit in your Ranchero. I'm planning to use a T-5 in my 65 Mustang. The AU 4.0 Intech stock power output is 157KW (210HP).

Hope this helps

I'll see if I can get the dimensions for you. One thing I do know is that the Broad Band Manifold (BBM) on the 4.0 will interfere with the left shock tower on the 65 Mustang.

Will the rear sump pan from the early Barra fit the US 250?

Or pre-crossflow 4.0 AU rear sump pan fit US 250 block?

The engine looks the same as the photos, sump is correct for my steering , if I can’t find any wire information. I will pass on it and look for an old mustang 6 cylinder or a 289/302

Hey Verr1908

Sorry i just saw this post.

An Intech will be a tight fit into a ranchero engine bay, they are taller than a 250 and the intake would be on the drivers side of a US vehicle (assuming that's what you have in the UK)

If you like send me an email with what you are trying to achieve and I might be able to help out.

Cheers,
