63 Carb with 68 Dizzy

Hello All,

I'm having problems tuning my 63 Autolite 1100 with SCV
with Auto Tranny. The engine is a 68 200 cid (non Load-a-matic).

Do ya'll think the carb I ordered, being a 63 with the SCV, is what
is giving me a fit? I tried several hours with no luck.

Can the SCV be plugged and if so how?

The carb is freshly re-built and from a reputable company.

Thanks All

Howdy Fixer;

The '63 1100 with SCV is not compatible with a '68 distributor.

It should still tune and run at an idle.

What are your symptoms?

The '68 distributor is designed for a ported vacuum source from the carb. It will work, somewhat with a manifold vacuum source, but not as designed.

Even the most respectable carb rebuilders have moments.

Describe your frustarations.

Adios, David

CZLN6,

Thanks for the reply.

Carb is installed.

No vacuum leaks.

It will idle somewhat but only with air/fuel screw all the way in.
When I back it out a little, it starts to die.

After I shut it off, fuel dumps into the venturi opening and
floods it out.

I have even did a rebuild myself and checked the float
level and everything is ok.

While driving, car seems to have plenty of power while cruising.
But, it stumbles and hesitates upon initial acceleration.

Thanks

I've been told you can disable the SCV by putting a small amount of epoxy over the hole in the venturi. You'll need to remove the carb and look down the throat towards the bottom of the venturi. You should see a small hole in the wall. Just press a dab of epoxy in there and no more SCV.

Someone else with more technical knowledge on carbs might have a better idea but this procedure was described to me by John at Pony Carbs.

Do you think the SCV may be a problem.

Not sure which way to go, CZLN6 seems to think
it is no big deal.

I've got the Ford Six Performance book. It speaks somewhat
of the different carbs. This is a great book.

Why couldn't you just cap the vacuum line coming out of the SCV, and use straight manifold vacuum for the distributor vacuum advance?

Howdy:

The SCV is not causing your excessive flooding and sputering. You have some sort of misalignment where the needle seats against the seat. Take the top off again and make sure that the float and the wire from which the needle hangs is properly lined up with the seat. Is it possible that the gasket is interfering with the function of the float and needle valve?

It is also possible that you have some warpage where the top seals to the body.

Check it out again. Don't even think of the SCV again until you have solved the excess gas and the sputter. One thing at a time.

Howdy Back:

Ooops! I confused the float to needle valve linkage with a 2100. The needle in the 1100 is free. Gravity allows it to drop and open when the bowl is empty. As the bowl fills and the float rises a tang on the float armature pushes the needle valve up and seats it against the seat. If the tang is not at the correct angle to the needle valve, the needle valve will cock, bind and not close.

Check the angle of the tang contact with the needle valve. Make sure the needle valve moves freely and seats/closes completely. Make sure the tang on the float armature is correct so as to not cock and bind the needle valve and to effect complete closure of the needle against the seat.

The SCV is a big deal to a good running engine, but it is not the cause of your excessive gas problems. You need to fix the over abundance of raw gas 1st.

Please check the function of the float, float tang, needle valve and seat and let me know what you find. I'd appreciate knowing.

Hey Fairlane fixer, How's the carb problems coming? Give us some feed back. anything New?

Adios, David

Haven't tried the carb lately.

Still running my old Holley 1904.

Mybe I can find a used Autolite 1100 or compatible
somewhere and rebuilt it.

This Autolite I have my have something else wrong.

P.S. I noticed the re-manufacturer capped off the vent hole where
the vent rod plunger goes.
Could this be a problem?
