I recently met a guy @ a servo who told me he ran his xp (stock motor ) on unleaded...mine is a stock 200 pursuit, and wondered if it can be done. LRP seems to be crap.
I know u can replace motor components to be able to run on unleaded, but has anyone done this or know what the cost is to do it?

cheers, Mcfly

i have a 75 cortina all stock and i run premium, no conversion. every month or so i go to the servo and get a 500ml bottle of stuff that lubricates the valves so you can run unleaded. a 500ml bottle lasts 500ltrs so it's pretty good value. i noticed and deffinit increase in throttle response and a little more power. so if you're unsure about the full conversion i strongly recomend it, i think it's called valve master?

McFly,
With my last down flow 200 in my XM I tried the local cats pi** called unleaded to see how long the low compression 200 from an XA would last on just unleaded.
I only got 3,1/2 months and about 3900 miles. To convert a well running low emission engine into a misfiring high hydrocarbon piece of junk.
Even with the low compression engine which was quite happy to run on that rubbish. The valves were recessed into the cylinder head so far that a full set of six exhaust valve seats and head rebuild was required.
Your early 200 may run succesfully on unleaded for a short period of time but engine trouble will not be far away.
If you would like to rebuild your engine to run on unleaded this could be achieved. Usually this will require a full engine rebuild, this is to lower the compression ratio to accomodate the low octane fuel. Also to rebuild the cylinder head to LPG specifications to assure a satisfactory engine life.
Does this help? Or pose more questions?
Noel.

You could always import the American 200/250 log heads which had really strong inserted valves from 1977 to 1981, or less strong but still good induction hardened valves from 1973 onwards. The had huge valves the same size as the early alloy head II Falcon engines, big intake ports and an integral manifold which could flow well. Make sure you get a two barrel carby adaptor to fit the Weber ADM carb, and your old XP will look stock, but perform like a rocket. Use the XE distributor.

Now that would be funny, seing as soo many Americans want leaded 2v 250 heads...

I'm certainly no expert in these matters but Shell have recently advertised the fact that they are removing Lead replacement fuel from the market.
They state you should run older leaded cars on optimax and add valve lubricant to each tank. (See latest edition of Unique car Magazine).
It makes for expensive motoring but if we were driving these cars for their economy we're in the wrong decade!

ive got an xp sedan with a 170 motor and a 2 speed auto.
it runs fine on unleaded. no engine changes or hardend valves to run it. she does run fast, or accelerate great, but that only because you cant expect that with a 2 speed auto and 170 motor.
anyways maybe you should give it a go and see how it goes?
