How strong are the little 200s anyway? I know the 144 cant be that strong with thier 5 (I thik) mains I have seen some pictures of some of the internals of the 200. The pistons look a bit archaic with thier strange, long skirts but I guess after market ones would be improved. I havent seen the rods, but I guess it could be a similar case. What I am interested in is how strong is the actual block? And how do you guys survive on the stock head? I know the valves are quite small, and the integrated intake inst very much better is it? Do you cut the intake off and fabricate soem nice tubes? It would be cool to get the wiring harness off of a 300 EFI 6 cylinder and hook up a neat little setup with long ram tubes and a large plenum chanber. But even with that setup or with a Holley, dont the valve sizes hold you back a fair amount? And how much lift can the stock heads take?
I have been considering building a 300 because of the fact that it is a rare site to see a 65 with a 300 instead of the ever-so-common 289/302, 351W/C, 460 etc. Plus, the endless well of torque produced from the 300 is a bit encouraging! That with a turbo would be an interesting setup.
BTW, thanks for any info on the subject!

check out the tech section, there are some great articles in there about getting more power out of the small sixes
but i know that if the builder is really determined to get more horses out of their six, they turn to the aussie head with it's removeable intake (good for something like 20-30HP i believe)
info here
buy it here!
but, if you want to buy the aussie head, i would suggest that you check here as well

as for how strong it is, i know that i've never heard of one dying because of some catastrophic failure like what is shown here but then again i am a relative newbie here (he says this with close to 200 posts), but ask Jack (mustangsix) or Adam (addo), or any of those that have been here longer than i, and i think they will tell you pretty much the same thing, these blocks are pretty much indestructible.......

hope this helps

PS - welcome to the six world! now you will never escape

The bottom ends on the engines (200's anyway) are virtually indestructable with just a couple of mods like balancing and installing V8 (289-302) rod bolts.

I've ran mine up to 6000 RPM's hundreds of times with no ill effects. The log head can be "modified" any number of ways so that it can breath better.

Take a look at my site for some ideas and especially at these pages,

8) as far as i have been able to tell there really is no engine tougher to kill than the 144-250 six. even the 4 main bearing engines handle some serious power with out giving up.

Where in Rhode Island are you? We should get together sometime (though I'm moving to Mass in a week). I'm in Portsmouth.

Hey guys, thanks alot for all of the info! This cleared up alot of my questions.
Cobra, I live in EG. And no, I am not some rich kid :P hehe. My car is in Norton Mass right now btw.

You'll be closer to my new home then my present one. We are moving off island because it is so expensive on island to buy a house. We'll definitely have to meet up sometime. There are a few of us in the immediate vicinity of RI/SE Mass.

We could race our machines at Epping during the FFW, that would be cool. How many NE people are there here?

Al is in North Attleboro, there are a few in CT.

There are some VMFers (vintage-mustang.com) in there area.
